About The Position

General Motors is seeking an experienced Software Engineering Manager to lead its Autonomous Vehicle Data Processing and Services team. The manager will lead engineers building distributed systems, data infrastructure, and platform software for pipelines and storage that transform and serve petabyte-scale autonomous vehicle telemetry. The platform supports perception, planning, machine-learning training, safety metrics, and simulation. The role works across cloud distributed infrastructure and downstream AI/ML pipelines, balancing operational rigor, throughput, and cost-efficient cloud architecture. This is a player-coach role involving direct technical design, implementation, and delivery alongside team mentorship and leadership. The manager owns the vision and architectural roadmap for AV Data services, including batch inference processing tools and streaming services for replay and simulation. The role is categorized as hybrid, with the selected candidate expected to report to a specific location at least three times per week or at another frequency set by their manager. Relocation benefits are available to candidates who qualify under company policy. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or another relevant field, or equivalent real-world experience.
  • At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience in distributed systems, big data platforms, or cloud infrastructure.
  • At least 2 years of formal engineering leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, operating, and scaling petabyte-scale distributed data pipelines and storage systems.
  • Expert-level proficiency in C++, Rust, Go, or Python, with a track record of designing and implementing robust distributed systems.
  • Expertise deploying and managing services in at least one major public cloud provider (Azure, GCP, or AWS), using automation and observability for operational excellence.
  • A track record of translating complex, ambiguous cross-functional requirements into dependable technical roadmaps and reliable software deliverables.
  • Must not require GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future, including company sponsorship or other immigration support.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience implementing data platform services such as catalog, indexing, planning, pruning, and optimization paths in a petabyte-scale environment.
  • Passion for self-driving technology and its potential impact.
  • Comfort delivering in a polyglot programming environment.
  • Experience delivering data-intensive distributed compute architectures.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute directly to technical design, implementation, and delivery while mentoring and guiding the engineering team.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of software and data engineers.
  • Foster engineering excellence, code quality, and ownership.
  • Own the vision and architectural roadmap for AV Data services, including batch inference processing tools and streaming services for replay and simulation.
  • Optimize cloud compute and storage usage, including cloud providers, S3 tiering, and distributed caches, balancing query performance and cost efficiency.
  • Establish production-grade SLAs, monitoring, data lineage, and automated testing across data services.
  • Own incident management and root-cause analysis for mission-critical platform outages.
  • Translate complex, ambiguous cross-functional requirements into technical roadmaps and reliable software deliverables.

Benefits

  • Relocation benefits are available for candidates who qualify under company policy.
  • GM states that it provides benefits supporting employee well-being at work and at home; specific benefits are described in its Total Rewards resources.
