About The Position

Nuro is hiring an Autonomous Vehicle Operator to operate test vehicles in manual and autonomous modes and support the development of self-driving technology. Operators drive for up to eight hours a day in varied real-world traffic and road conditions, using Nuro software and equipment to collect data and provide detailed feedback to engineering teams. The role emphasizes safe driving, careful judgment, accountability, and adherence to detailed procedures.

The position is a 12-month temporary assignment, full-time and on-site in Santa Clara, California. The available shift is overnight, 10:00 p.m.–6:30 a.m. Pacific Time, and applicants must be available five days per week on the fixed shift selected when applying. Compensation for the overnight shift is $28.25 per hour, with an additional $5 per hour for hours worked on Saturdays and Sundays. A discretionary contract completion bonus may also be available based on individual and company performance.

Requirements

• Practice safe driving and follow detailed procedures.
• Be available five days per week on the fixed shift selected when applying.
• Hold a current, valid California driver's license and have maintained a valid driver's license for the three years immediately preceding application.
• Pass a criminal background check and drug test following a conditional offer of employment.
• Have no more than one point on the driving record or one non-major moving violation in the preceding three years.
• Have no conviction for, and no history of license suspension or revocation for, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the past 10 years.
• Never have been at fault in a motor vehicle accident resulting in injury or death.
• Meet and maintain applicable driving-record requirements and qualify for an Autonomous Vehicle Tester (AVT) license where required by state law.
• Stay focused and observant while sitting and driving for long periods.
• Communicate clearly verbally and in writing, and be comfortable using modern online collaboration platforms such as Slack, Google Meet, or similar.
• Stay calm, solve problems, and work independently.
• Maintain reliable attendance and arrive on time consistently.
• Be able to sit for three to four hours at a time, for up to eight hours per day, in an enclosed vehicle alone or occasionally with a co-driver.
• Bend, squat, stretch, and lift up to 25 pounds on a regular basis.
• Move the head, neck, back, and shoulders side to side and up and down as needed to operate a vehicle safely.
• Be able to work in a vehicle that may brake, swerve, slow, or stop abruptly.
• Hold and grasp with the hands and frequently use the feet to operate vehicle pedals.

Responsibilities

• Drive Nuro test vehicles in manual and autonomous modes for up to eight hours per day while following safety and driving procedures.
• Monitor vehicle safety, navigation, and driving systems, while staying alert to traffic, pedestrians, bicyclists, weather, and road conditions.
• Collect real-world driving data using Nuro software and share feedback with engineers.
• Complete vehicle checks before and after each shift, report problems, and perform basic upkeep such as washing vehicles and checking tire pressure.
• Troubleshoot operational issues and coordinate with Mission Operations (dispatch) to resolve problems safely.
• Use laptops, tablets, smartphones, and other tools to complete reports and document work.
• Occasionally speak with members of the public or support ridealongs for company leaders, investors, engineers, and other guests.
