Software Engineering Manager (Autonomous Vehicle Data)

General Motors•Austin, TX
•Hybrid

About The Position

GM is seeking an experienced Software Engineering Manager to lead its AV Data Processing and Services team. The team builds distributed systems, data infrastructure, and platform software for core pipelines and storage backbones that transform and serve petabyte-scale autonomous vehicle telemetry. The platform supports perception, planning, machine-learning training, safety metrics, and simulation, connecting cloud distributed infrastructure with downstream AI/ML pipelines while balancing operational rigor, throughput, and cloud cost efficiency. The manager will be a player-coach, contributing to technical design, implementation, and delivery while mentoring engineers. They will lead team hiring and development, own the technical vision and architectural roadmap for AV Data services—including batch inference processing tools and streaming services for replay and simulation—and optimize cloud compute and storage. They will also establish production SLAs, monitoring, data lineage, and automated testing, and own incident management and root-cause analysis for mission-critical outages. The position is hybrid. The selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least three times a week or at another frequency set by their manager. Relocation benefits are available to candidates who qualify under company policy. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.

Requirements

  • BA or BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or another relevant field, or equivalent real-world experience.
  • At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience in distributed systems, big data platforms, or cloud infrastructure.
  • At least 2 years of formal engineering leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, operating, and scaling petabyte-scale distributed data pipelines and storage systems.
  • Expert-level proficiency in C++, Rust, Go, or Python, with a proven track record designing and implementing robust distributed systems.
  • Expertise deploying and managing services in at least one major public cloud provider—Azure, GCP, or AWS—using automation and observability for operational excellence.
  • Proven ability to translate complex, ambiguous cross-functional requirements into dependable technical roadmaps and reliable software deliverables.
  • Must not require GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience implementing Data Platform services, including catalog, indexing, planning, pruning, and optimization paths in a petabyte-scale environment.
  • Passion for self-driving technology and its potential impact.
  • Comfort delivering in a polyglot programming environment.
  • Experience delivering data-intensive distributed compute architectures.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute directly to technical design, implementation, and delivery while mentoring and guiding the engineering team.
  • Recruit, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of software and data engineers.
  • Foster engineering excellence, code quality, and ownership.
  • Own the vision and architectural roadmap for AV Data services, including batch inference processing tools and streaming services for replay and simulation tools.
  • Optimize cloud compute and storage footprint, including cloud provider resources, S3 tiering, and distributed caches, balancing query performance and cost efficiency.
  • Establish production-grade SLAs, monitoring, data lineage, and automated testing across data services.
  • Own incident management and root-cause analysis for mission-critical platform outages.

Benefits

  • Relocation benefits are available for candidates who qualify under company policy.
  • Benefits supporting employee well-being at work and at home; details are available through GM Total Rewards resources.
