About The Position

The Software Engineering Intern will support STERIS’s Software Engineering Team in new product development and sustaining existing products under the guidance of software engineers. The internship offers experience with software projects using leading-edge technologies for sterilizers and connected devices used in healthcare and life sciences, as well as the software development life cycle for medical devices. The internship runs from May through August 2027 in Plymouth, Minnesota, and is onsite and full-time. Specific assignments will be based on the intern’s aptitude, competency, and coursework.

Requirements

Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering/Development, or Computer Science.
Successful completion of sophomore-level coursework or above by May 2027; junior-level coursework is preferred.
Coursework or professional experience with one or more of Python, C, C++, or C# .NET.
Basic software design and algorithm knowledge.
Exposure to operating systems and communication protocols.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Good analytical and problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

Coursework appropriate for academic standing; a minimum GPA of 3.5 is desired.
Understanding of SOLID principles and hardware kernel drivers is desirable.
Junior-level coursework is preferred.

Responsibilities

Design, implement, and debug software components in accordance with corporate standards and procedures.
Program and debug Python, C, or C++ embedded RTOS-based applications and PC applications.
Develop and verify software components, assess technologies, debug software defects, and automate engineering and factory tests supporting product development and production.
Write and execute unit, software, system, integration, and stress tests.
Update software documentation as needed.
Research and evaluate new software and hardware technologies for potential integration into products.
Collaborate as a team member on engineering projects.
