About The Position

As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll architect and scale the cart and checkout experiences powering Walmart, the world's largest retailer. You'll lead significant engineering initiatives end-to-end, translating business goals into robust, maintainable mobile solutions built on GraphQL and Node.js. You'll own the technical design and implementation of distributed systems, integrating seamlessly with large-scale backend APIs while upholding the highest standards for performance, security, and reliability. Working cross-functionally with Product, Design, Backend, and Platform teams, you'll drive cohesive transaction flows from concept to production. The Transactions Cart Team is part of the Pre-Purchase Organization within Customer Experience Platforms, dedicated to delivering fast, reliable, and seamless checkout journeys across Walmart’s mobile experiences. The team manages essential pre-purchase and cart functions, including cart review, promotions, payments, and order placement, ensuring smooth transaction completion at scale. Collaborating closely with Product, Design, Payments, and Backend Platform teams, the group focuses on reducing friction, enhancing conversion, and maintaining high reliability. This team plays a vital role in shaping the customer experience before order placement while supporting innovation and performance demands.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience building software applications using NodeJS and GraphQL.
  • Proven expertise in object-oriented programming and documentation-based coding practices.
  • Strong experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, and related technologies including Node.js.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver scoped features through collaborative engineering teams using iterative development.
  • Proficiency in code review, debugging, and continuous integration/deployment processes.
  • Experience integrating AI/ML components and leveraging generative AI tools to enhance software solutions.
  • Solid understanding of scalable, secure, and maintainable software design aligned with platform objectives.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and translate business needs into technical requirements.
  • Commitment to engineering excellence, continuous improvement, and mentoring peers.
  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Option 2: 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Software Engineering, or related area and 1 year's experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Background in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.

Responsibilities

  • Build and scale high‑performance cart experiences for Walmart, the world’s largest retailer.
  • Drive technical design, architecture, and implementation using GraphQL, NodeJS, and modern design patterns.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Design, Backend, and Platform teams to deliver end‑to‑end transaction flows.
  • Own production stability and reliability by troubleshooting issues, performing root‑cause analysis, and preventing recurrence across devices.
  • Design and integrate Node JS, Graphql solutions with large‑scale distributed backend systems using REST and GraphQL APIs.
  • Lead and participate in design reviews and code reviews, ensuring high standards for performance, security, and maintainability.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship, contributing to engineering best practices across the team.
