Software Engineer, Developer Products

OpenRouter
•$215,000 - $285,000

About The Position

OpenRouter is an AI routing and infrastructure layer that helps enterprises access, manage, and optimize large language models across providers. The Software Engineer will join the Developer Products team and build the surfaces external developers use to integrate with OpenRouter, including its API, SDKs, documentation, CLI, and other tools. The role will also help shape how agents interact with the platform and its integrations. The engineer will own and evolve developer-facing products as OpenRouter's developer ecosystem grows, working autonomously while collaborating with DevRel, Product, and Platform teams. This includes expanding platform features and delivering effective experiences for developers and AI coding agents.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience building external-facing developer products such as APIs, SDKs, or developer platforms widely used by engineers.
  • Strong API and SDK design instincts, with experience shipping libraries developers integrate with.
  • Strong TypeScript skills.
  • An AI-forward approach to personal workflows and interest in agentic systems.
  • High agency and a bias toward action, including the ability to identify and ship missing developer ecosystem products.
  • Comfort owning a product line at a small company with fluid team boundaries.
  • Strong written communication skills; documentation, changelogs, and SDK reference materials are part of the job.
  • Pragmatic judgment when balancing speed and simplicity.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience at developer-centric companies.
  • Hands-on experience designing or maintaining agent SDKs or other agentic developer tooling.
  • Existing use of OpenRouter, open-source contributions, or side projects in AI tooling.

Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve the public REST API and its developer experience, including API design, ergonomics, versioning, errors, and rate-limiting behavior.
  • Build and maintain client SDKs in TypeScript and Python, and lead launches of upcoming SDKs.
  • Ship and expand the Agent SDK for multi-step, agentic workloads built on OpenRouter.
  • Treat documentation, examples, and starter repositories as products; instrument developer and AI coding agent entry points and improve them.
  • Make developer-facing surfaces agent-friendly.
  • Collaborate with DevRel, Product, and Platform teams to identify gaps in the developer ecosystem and address them end to end.
