Staff Software Engineer, New Products

Pivotal Health•Santa Monica, CA
•$210,000 - $235,000

About The Position

Pivotal Health is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to help develop new products that improve healthcare reimbursement workflows for providers. The role works in a short-cycle product pod: engineers speak with customers, quickly prototype solutions, and use customer behavior and experiment results to decide whether to advance, change, or stop an idea. The engineer contributes as a peer to product decisions and collaborates with the co-founder and Director of Product Engineering. The position builds products from zero to one across backend services, APIs, data pipelines, AI-driven workflows, and React front ends. Successful prototypes may be developed into production systems and scaled with the broader engineering organization. The engineer also sets technical direction for new products, creates reusable building blocks and standards, uses AI tools in development, and partners with platform, data, and operations teams to build on existing capabilities. The company offers access to its production IDR platform, reimbursement data, shared AI tooling, and operations experts. Pivotal Health primarily hires around its Los Angeles and New York hubs and is open to exceptional talent elsewhere. Remote and hybrid flexibility varies by role and team; this posting does not specify the work arrangement for this role. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship. Employment is contingent on applicable background checks and is at-will, as permitted by law.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience building and shipping production software, including experience building new products from scratch at a startup or on a new-product team.
  • Strong backend engineering skills and experience with Python (FastAPI or similar) or another modern service language.
  • Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL.
  • Ability to deliver a full product experience independently, with enough React and TypeScript experience to take an idea through to a finished feature.
  • Experience working directly with users and changing direction based on customer feedback.
  • Experience building with large language models (LLMs) and sound judgment about where they are useful.
  • Comfort making decisions with incomplete information and revisiting decisions as evidence changes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as an early or founding engineer.
  • Background in healthcare revenue cycle or another operationally complex field, such as insurance, fintech, or logistics.
  • Familiarity with GCP, SQLAlchemy, and React Router/Remix.
  • Experience with product analytics and experiment design.
  • Experience building workflow software or internal tools for operations teams.

Responsibilities

  • Join customer calls and site visits and turn customer feedback into working prototypes, often within the same week.
  • Build new products from zero to one across backend services, APIs, data pipelines, AI-driven workflows, and React front ends.
  • Work with the pod to define what each prototype should prove, instrument experiments, and assess results honestly.
  • Partner with the co-founder and Director of Product Engineering to decide whether to advance, redirect, or stop product ideas, contributing a strong technical perspective.
  • Develop successful prototypes into production systems that the broader engineering team can operate and extend.
  • Set technical direction for new products, including architecture, reusable building blocks, and standards.
  • Use AI tools to build, debug, and explore, and help improve their use across engineering.
  • Collaborate with platform, data, and operations teams to reuse existing capabilities rather than rebuild them.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation, including equity.
  • Full health, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Retirement savings plan through 401(k).
  • Flexible time off.
  • Opportunities for company-wide connection and events.
