Software Engineer (Mobile & Sensing)

Cartesian SystemsCambridge, MA

About The Position

Cartesian is seeking a Software Engineer (Mobile & Sensing) to join their team. This role involves working closely with customers, the product team, and other internal teams to craft technology into useful applications that combine the physical world, data, and human interaction. The engineer will contribute to the development of our first product, an indoor inventory positioning system that operates on existing handheld devices. The role is generalist, requiring work across the stack to own features end-to-end, as well as contributing to internal platform improvements like infrastructure, CI, and architecture. Examples of work include implementing user-facing features for retail associates, building mobile and web tools for data generation for R&D, creating dashboards for product insights, developing scalable web services and APIs, managing cloud infrastructure, and improving CI/CD pipelines. Engineers are expected to collaborate autonomously to identify and drive projects forward.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience building software products at a company with a high engineering bar.
  • Passion for building applications in the physical world.
  • Comfortable with getting out from behind the laptop – going on-site to stores, talking with users, testing on real devices, and using that as product input.
  • Track record of driving complex, end-to-end features.
  • Good judgement on how to structure software applications for development speed, maintainability, and performance.
  • Excellent written communication (designing projects, sharing progress updates, reviewing other people’s work, getting buy-in on decisions, etc.).
  • High Growth: Intrinsically curious, track record of learning hard things quickly, actively seek critical feedback, work on things that matter even if unfamiliar.
  • High Ownership: High expectations for self and others, deliver outcomes not tickets, care about the system as a whole.
  • Low Ego: Don’t know everything, want the best ideas to win, nothing is below you, good leader, listener and mentor.
  • Engineering Excellence: Default to simple, maintainable solutions, intentional with decisions, balance technical quality, business priorities, and long-term maintainability, communicate well in English.

Responsibilities

  • Implement new user-facing features that help retail associates locate items within physical stores.
  • Build mobile and web tools that generate high-quality datasets for the R&D team, powering the models behind spatial AI.
  • Build dashboards that turn raw usage into product insights for internal teams and customers.
  • Build scalable web services and intuitive APIs with modern Python.
  • Manage cloud infrastructure using IaC tools, including Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform.
  • Improve CI/CD pipelines to help ship quickly and with high quality.
  • Collaborate closely with all aspects of the business to figure out what needs to get done.
  • Pull in the right people for prioritization and sign-off.
  • Move projects forward autonomously.
  • Iteratively refine user experience while maintaining a high standard for engineering quality.
