2027 Summer Intern, MS/PhD, Software Engineer, ML Frameworks and Efficiency
About The Position
Waymo is hiring a 2027 summer intern for its Systems Intelligence and Machine Learning (SIML) team, specifically the ML Frameworks and Efficiency subteam. The subteam works to scale Waymo’s autonomous driving technology by delivering advanced machine-learning capabilities, efficient and reliable infrastructure, and an ecosystem that supports rapid innovation. Interns partner with industry leaders on impactful projects while applying their knowledge and developing their skills. The intern will learn about the problem the current LPM model addresses and its details, improve or extend reinforcement-learning infrastructure to support LPM model training, investigate and improve training efficiency, and identify and integrate promising reinforcement-learning technologies. This is a hybrid onsite internship. The expected hourly rate is $70 for Master’s students and $85 for PhD students. Compensation and benefits are subject to applicable eligibility requirements.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a master’s or PhD degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related technical field.
- Fundamental understanding of machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning.
- Familiarity with modern machine-learning frameworks such as JAX, Flax, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
- Strong software development skills with Python.
Nice To Haves
- Hands-on project experience with machine learning or reinforcement learning.
- Experience with large-scale machine-learning systems infrastructure.
- Experience with autonomous driving or related technologies.
Responsibilities
- Understand the problem the current LPM model is designed to solve and its details.
- Improve or extend reinforcement-learning infrastructure to support LPM model training needs.
- Profile and investigate performance issues, and maintain and improve training efficiency.
- Identify promising reinforcement-learning technologies and integrate them into the infrastructure.
