About The Position

The CLM Workflow team within Docusign’s B2B organization builds Workflow Designer capabilities that help customers automate complex agreement processes at scale. Based in Chicago, the Software Engineer Intern will work on an Expression AI Assistant that helps workflow authors understand, debug, and optimize expressions used in Workflow Designer. The intern will collaborate with engineers and product partners to analyze real-world workflows, prototype an assistant panel in the expression builder, and ship features that improve author productivity and workflow performance. This is a three-month internship and an individual-contributor role reporting to the Director, Software Engineering. The work spans an 8–12 week project roadmap, from early research and design through implementation, user feedback, and documentation of best practices and extensibility for future teams.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a relevant bachelor’s degree program, with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and May/June 2028.
  • Pursuing a major in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
  • Experience with at least one modern programming language, such as C#, Java, TypeScript, or JavaScript.
  • Experience with basic data structures, algorithms, and debugging techniques.
  • Experience collaborating in a hybrid team environment and communicating with engineers and product partners.
  • Must already be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time, permanent basis without current or future sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building or contributing to user interfaces using modern web or application frameworks such as React or Angular.
  • Exposure to AI/ML concepts or large language models, especially applied to developer tooling or productivity.
  • Familiarity with expression languages, scripting, or configuration logic, such as formula builders, rules engines, or domain-specific languages.
  • Interest in workflow automation, CLM, or tools that reduce technical debt and improve maintainability for large systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, and willingness to learn from code reviews and feedback.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the CLM Workflow engineering team to design and implement features for an Expression AI Assistant embedded in the Workflow Designer expression builder UI.
  • Help build and refine an analysis engine that detects common anti-patterns, performance issues, and maintainability problems in workflow expressions and presents clear recommendations to authors.
  • Implement assistant capabilities that explain expressions in plain English, suggest optimizations, and generate expression scaffolds from natural-language descriptions of author intent.
  • Contribute to UI integration for the assistant panel, including workflows for running analyses, reviewing suggestions, and safely applying recommended changes in a test or preview environment.
  • Participate in an 8–12 week project roadmap, from research and design through implementation, user feedback, and final documentation of best practices and extensibility for future teams.
  • Write technical documentation, share demos with stakeholders, and incorporate feedback to improve usability and impact.
