About The Position

The Cloud Foundations team owns and operates the foundational infrastructure that powers GitHub’s internal compute platform across Azure and its global data centers. This includes the VM platform, compute provisioning and lifecycle management, operating system and container base images, fleet-wide configuration, host inventory, and infrastructure-as-code tooling. The team aims to provide reliable, secure, low-toil foundations that let engineering teams build and operate services without managing underlying infrastructure complexity. As a Software Engineer III, you will build and improve systems that create, configure, secure, maintain, and retire GitHub’s compute resources. Work may include VM provisioning workflows, image pipelines, configuration management, safe fleet maintenance, service discovery, and Terraform-based automation. You will improve the reliability and recovery of critical infrastructure, modernize legacy systems, and evolve GitHub’s Azure platform. You will collaborate with a distributed team and partners across engineering and security. The work includes delivering scoped projects, improving operational visibility, reducing manual work, supporting safe and consistent infrastructure practices, and operating owned services. This role offers the opportunity to make platform improvements at GitHub’s scale and shape infrastructure used by engineering teams across the company.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of experience in software engineering, computer science, or a related technical discipline, with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software in languages such as C, C++, C#, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python; alternatively, an associate degree in a listed or related field and at least 3 years of experience; a bachelor’s degree in a listed or related field and at least 2 years of relevant experience and coding; a master’s degree in a listed or related field; or equivalent experience.
  • At least 2 years building and supporting large, high-traffic applications at scale within platform or infrastructure domains.
  • At least 2 years supporting and building cloud-native workloads in Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 4 years of experience with Azure or another cloud provider.
  • Experience building or maintaining planetary-scale engineering systems.
  • Experience working with a remote, distributed team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of reliable, performant, and secure systems across compute foundations, including VM runtime, provisioning, configuration management, and infrastructure-as-code tooling.
  • Build automation that reduces operational toil and makes infrastructure provisioning, configuration changes, and fleet maintenance safer and more predictable.
  • Maintain and improve platform services across Azure and GitHub’s data centers, including VM lifecycle workflows, OS and container image pipelines, host inventory, and Terraform tooling.
  • Write, review, and test high-quality code with attention to maintainability, observability, security, and failure recovery.
  • Collaborate with partner engineering and security teams to integrate platform capabilities, troubleshoot issues, and support infrastructure modernization and compliance requirements.
  • Participate in the team’s on-call rotation, respond to incidents, and implement follow-up improvements that strengthen service reliability and recovery.
  • Create documentation, runbooks, and design proposals, and communicate effectively through asynchronous practices in a distributed engineering team.
