About The Position

Garmin is seeking a full-time Software Engineer C++ for its Maps Platform in the Greater Kansas City area or Cary, North Carolina. The role focuses on improving how map data is delivered, stored, and rendered across embedded devices, from wearables to cycling computers. The engineer will build core systems that make maps efficient to distribute, fast to install, and responsive at runtime in constrained environments. This is a systems- and innovation-focused role involving C++, performance engineering, and scalable data architecture, including next-generation data representation, memory optimization, and high-performance multithreaded systems. The work affects map responsiveness and usability across Garmin’s product ecosystem. The engineer designs and implements software functionality, uses engineering tools throughout development, contributes to technical research and root-cause analysis, and collaborates through code reviews. The role may include technical leadership on derivative software projects and mentoring less experienced Software Engineer 1 engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Math, Physics, or a related field, and at least 1 year of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 as a general rule.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and experience developing moderately complex software in C++.
  • Proficient knowledge and use of relevant software engineering tools, including configuration management systems, build processes, debuggers, emulators, simulators, and logic analyzers.

Nice To Haves

  • Outstanding academics, defined as a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5.
  • Previous work or internship experience in design, particularly for consumer products.
  • Experience with map rendering, GIS, or geospatial data systems.
  • Familiarity with data compression, tiling, indexing, or spatial data systems.
  • Experience optimizing rendering performance or large-scale data access patterns in constrained or high-performance systems.
  • Previous experience in embedded, wearable, fitness, automotive, or other resource-constrained environments.
  • Superior academics, defined as a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5.
  • Proficiency writing software in C#, SQL, or Python for tooling and automation.

Responsibilities

  • Create and execute designs for small sets of new functionalities as part of a software project using C++.
  • Use software engineering tools, including configuration management systems, build processes, and debuggers, during software development.
  • May serve as a technical leader or Lead Software Engineer for a derivative software project.
  • Participate in peer code reviews by providing comments and suggestions.
  • Provide reliable solutions to problems using sound problem-solving techniques.
  • Perform technical root-cause analysis and outline corrective actions.
  • Contribute to technical research on new technologies.
  • Estimate level of effort, evaluate new options involving similar technology, suggest process improvements, and provide feedback on some electrical design aspects.
  • Mentor less experienced Software Engineer 1 engineers.
  • Improve the delivery, storage, installation, and runtime rendering of map data across embedded devices.

Benefits

  • Eligible for Garmin’s benefit program; details are available through Garmin Benefits.
