About The Position

Apple Services Engineering’s AI/ML quality organization is seeking a software developer in test to build developer tools, test frameworks, and libraries, and to lead cross-functional projects on a fast-moving team. The role combines quality engineering and software engineering to help deliver high-quality services to Apple customers, including backend services, machine learning models, and pipelines.

The position focuses on creating and maintaining automated testing and development frameworks, improving engineering practices and workflows, and promoting continuous testing and built-in quality throughout the software development lifecycle. It also involves evaluating tools, developing proof-of-concept models, recommending tools, and mentoring junior team members.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of experience, or a Master’s degree and at least 3 years of experience, in software development and/or test automation.
• At least 3 years of experience leading complex, distributed systems.
• Proficiency in Java, Python, or similar programming languages.
• Experience designing and implementing testing frameworks for distributed systems, including service-layer testing of backend APIs, data processing, and infrastructure components.
• Passion for quality engineering and developing creative approaches to testing machine learning algorithms and large-scale distributed data systems.
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders across organizations and project timelines.
• Highly organized, creative, self-motivated, and results-oriented.
• Enthusiasm for the possibilities enabled by AI and ML technologies.
• Commitment to advocating for a positive customer experience.

Nice To Haves

• Knowledge of Big Data systems; Apache Spark knowledge is a plus.
• Experience testing or working with AI/ML systems or platforms involving ML model training, data pipelines, and algorithms.
• Ability to leverage technology to solve problems, including building tooling, automating tasks, and developing supporting systems to streamline development workflows.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain automation tests, testing and development frameworks, and tooling for backend services, machine learning models, and pipelines.
• Analyze, recommend, and implement best practices for coding guidelines, design principles, process workflows, quality gates, and CI/CD processes.
• Partner with cross-functional teams to define and drive quality assurance best practices, techniques, and methodologies that enhance productivity and quality.
• Identify process and architecture inefficiencies and drive improvements while reducing risk and fostering built-in quality and continuous testing throughout the SDLC.
• Guide tool analysis, create proof-of-concept models, and make recommendations to support tool selection.
• Mentor junior team members.
