Software Development Engineer in Test

Checkpoint Systems•Deptford, NJ
•$110,000 - $130,000

About The Position

The Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) is part of Checkpoint Systems’ Embedded Software team within Research and Development. The role designs, develops, maintains, and enhances automated test frameworks and end-to-end test coverage for software running on embedded Linux-based devices, including RFID readers and edge computing platforms. The SDET works across the device software stack, including embedded Linux services, Python-based microservices and REST APIs, MQTT protocols, device-to-cloud communication, and on-device UI workflows for device management, diagnostics, and configuration. The role ensures the platform is validated through reliable, repeatable, and scalable automated testing. The position collaborates with software and firmware engineers, architects, QA, Field Service, Manufacturing, Product Management, and Compliance to define test strategies, improve release quality, and prevent and detect defects across hardware, networking, cloud connectivity, and UI integration points. The SDET reports to the Embedded Software Manager.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in software test automation, SDET, or software engineering with a strong automation focus.
  • Strong experience building and maintaining automated test suites covering UI, API, and integration testing, and improving test coverage over time.
  • Hands-on proficiency with Playwright, or demonstrated success with Selenium or an equivalent UI automation framework and the ability to transition quickly to Playwright.
  • Strong Linux experience, including shell tools, networking basics, permissions, and troubleshooting on-device issues.
  • Experience testing microservices, REST APIs, and service-to-service workflows, with an understanding of failure modes such as timeouts, retries, and dependency health.
  • Experience testing MQTT or message-based systems and validating message schemas, topics, and end-to-end flows.
  • Proficiency in Python, or willingness to learn rapidly, for automation, tooling, and test harness development.
  • Experience with Git or equivalent version control.
  • Strong debugging skills across software and hardware interactions and the ability to isolate issues in complex systems.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with engineering, QA, Field Service, and Product stakeholders, and to document procedures and results.
  • Strong communication skills, ownership of quality outcomes, ability to troubleshoot complex system interactions, and openness to learning new tools, technologies, and frameworks.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years working with embedded Linux systems, IoT devices, hardware-integrated software, device management systems, or field-deployed devices.
  • Experience with embedded Linux services, system and service orchestration, and validating startup dependencies and service health behaviors.
  • Experience with CI/CD and automated quality gates, such as GitHub Actions or Azure Pipelines, and test reporting and triage practices.
  • Experience with device upgrade/OTA, provisioning/commissioning workflows, and validating rollback and recovery behaviors.
  • Familiarity with RFID systems, IoT devices, or sensor integration and testing hardware-in-the-loop scenarios.
  • Cloud integration testing experience, preferably with Azure, and ability to validate device-to-cloud telemetry and service connectivity.
  • Familiarity with security testing concepts, including SAST/DAST/SCA awareness, and testing in regulated or compliance-oriented environments.
  • Experience creating test utilities in additional languages such as TypeScript/JavaScript, Bash, Go, or Rust.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain test automation frameworks for embedded Linux devices and supporting services using Python and/or other scripting languages.
  • Build and maintain end-to-end automated tests for device workflows, including on-device UI, configuration flows, diagnostics tools, and device management features.
  • Implement and maintain API-level automated tests for REST APIs used by local microservices, UI, and cloud services, including contract and compatibility validation across versions.
  • Implement automated validation for MQTT-based message flows and device-to-cloud communication patterns, including topic structure, payload validation, error handling, and retry behavior.
  • Partner with firmware teams to validate hardware-level interfaces and integration points, including RFID workflows, GPIO, drivers, networking behaviors, and provisioning and commissioning flows.
  • Design and execute integration, regression, and system-level test plans for embedded environments using real hardware, simulators, or mixed setups.
  • Work with engineers to improve platform testability by adding logging hooks, observability, stable APIs, and deterministic behaviors that enable automation.
  • Enhance device telemetry and logging validation and service observability checks to support QA and Field Service diagnostics and faster issue triage.
  • Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and define quality gates for smoke and regression tiers, flake management, and reporting.
  • Participate in peer reviews for test code and, where applicable, production code, providing constructive feedback to improve quality and maintainability.
  • Document test frameworks, test environment setup, test data strategies, known limitations, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Collaborate with Field Service to reproduce real-world issues and convert valuable field scenarios into automated regression coverage, including network flows, hardware interactions, and upgrade and rollback scenarios.
  • Support Manufacturing and Operations by validating provisioning, configuration, and upgrade flows for embedded devices through repeatable automated checks.
  • Provide task estimates, track progress, communicate risks, and deliver test automation work within sprint timelines.
  • Learn and work with new languages, tool chains, frameworks, and platforms as product needs evolve.
