About The Position

The Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) works on Checkpoint Systems’ Embedded Software team within Research and Development. The role designs, develops, maintains, and enhances automated test frameworks and end-to-end test coverage for software running on embedded Linux-based devices, including RFID readers and edge computing platforms. Testing spans embedded Linux services, Python-based microservices, REST APIs, MQTT and device-to-cloud communication, and on-device user-interface workflows for device management, diagnostics, and configuration. The SDET collaborates with software and firmware engineers, architects, QA, Field Service, Manufacturing, Product Management, and Compliance to define test strategies, improve release quality, and prevent and detect defects across hardware drivers and sensors, networking, cloud connectivity, and UI workflows. The role also supports provisioning, configuration, upgrades, field-issue reproduction, testability improvements, and integration of automated testing into CI/CD. The SDET reports to the Embedded Software Manager.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in software test automation, SDET, or software engineering with a strong automation focus.
  • Strong experience building and maintaining automated test suites covering UI, APIs, and integration, and improving test coverage over time.
  • Hands-on proficiency with Playwright, or demonstrated success with Selenium or an equivalent UI automation framework and ability to transition quickly to Playwright.
  • Strong Linux experience, including shell tools, networking basics, permissions, and troubleshooting on-device issues.
  • Experience testing microservices, REST APIs, and service-to-service workflows, with understanding of failure modes such as timeouts, retries, and dependency health.
  • Experience testing MQTT or message-based systems and validating message schemas, topics, and end-to-end flows.
  • Proficiency in Python, or willingness to learn it rapidly, for automation, tooling, and test harness development.
  • Experience with Git or equivalent version control.
  • Strong debugging skills across software and hardware interactions, including the ability to isolate issues in complex systems.
  • Clear communication with engineering, QA, Field Service, and Product stakeholders, and ability to document procedures and results.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years working with embedded Linux systems, IoT devices, hardware-integrated software, device management systems, or field-deployed devices.
  • Experience with embedded Linux services, system and service orchestration, startup dependencies, and service health validation.
  • Experience with CI/CD and automated quality gates, such as GitHub Actions or Azure Pipelines, and test reporting and triage practices.
  • Experience with device upgrades or OTA, provisioning and commissioning workflows, and rollback or recovery validation.
  • Familiarity with RFID systems, IoT devices, or sensor integration, and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • Cloud integration testing experience, preferably with Azure, including device-to-cloud telemetry and service connectivity validation.
  • Familiarity with security testing concepts such as SAST, DAST, and SCA, and testing in regulated or compliance-oriented environments.
  • Experience creating test utilities in TypeScript, JavaScript, Bash, Go, or Rust.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain test automation frameworks for embedded Linux devices and supporting services using Python and/or other scripting languages.
  • Build and maintain end-to-end automated tests for device workflows, including on-device UI, configuration flows, diagnostics tools, and device management features.
  • Implement and maintain API-level automated tests for REST APIs, including contract and compatibility validation across versions.
  • Automate validation of MQTT-based message flows and device-to-cloud communication, including topic structure, payloads, error handling, and retry behavior.
  • Partner with firmware teams to validate hardware-level interfaces and integration points, including RFID workflows, GPIO, drivers, networking, and provisioning or commissioning flows.
  • Design and execute integration, regression, and system-level test plans for embedded environments using real hardware, simulators, or mixed setups.
  • Improve platform testability in collaboration with engineers by enabling logging hooks, observability, stable APIs, and deterministic behaviors.
  • Enhance telemetry and logging validation and service observability checks to support diagnostics and issue triage.
  • Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and define quality gates, including smoke and regression tiers, flake management, and reporting.
  • Participate in peer reviews of test code and, when applicable, production code, providing actionable feedback.
  • Document test frameworks, environment setup, test data strategies, known limitations, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Collaborate with Field Service to reproduce real-world issues and turn valuable scenarios into automated regression tests.
  • Support Manufacturing and Operations by validating device provisioning, configuration, and upgrade flows with repeatable automated checks.
  • Provide task estimates, track progress, communicate risks, and deliver test automation work within sprint timelines.
  • Learn and work with new languages, toolchains, frameworks, and platforms as product needs evolve.
