Software Development Engineer in Test

ComPsych Corporation•,
•$135,000 - $165,000

About The Position

ComPsych is modernizing its technology with new customer-facing web and mobile experiences, a unified design system, and AI-powered product capabilities. The Senior SDET owns quality as an engineering discipline, working end to end with Engineering, Product, and Design. The role has no manual QA layer beneath it and is accountable for quality strategy, automation, exploratory testing, and the quality of test signals. AI agents support requirements analysis, scenario generation, automation, and failure diagnosis, while the SDET applies human judgment to determine whether results are trustworthy. Platform owns environments and pipelines; the SDET owns test configuration, data, and signal quality on those systems. PHI must remain out of non-production environments.

Requirements

  • Experience designing or evolving a team's quality system, not merely automating individual features.
  • Ability to translate product and architectural risk into a verification strategy and explain what was deliberately not tested.
  • Strong skills in a modern programming language and deep experience with test frameworks and shared automation architecture.
  • Ability to reason about concurrency, asynchronous workflows, and failure propagation across services.
  • Ability to diagnose test failures across services using logs, traces, and deployment context.
  • Experience owning synthetic-data strategy and deterministic isolation, including provisioning, reset, and non-production safeguards for sensitive data.
  • Deep expertise in at least one non-functional area: performance, resilience, security, or accessibility.
  • Ability to communicate residual risk clearly to Engineering and Product without becoming a release bottleneck.
  • Existing AI-first working practices, including establishing conventions adopted by other engineers and defining limits on agent changes without human review.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with failure injection or recovery testing in production-like environments.
  • Experience in healthcare, another regulated domain, or systems handling sensitive customer data.

Responsibilities

  • Own the team's quality strategy, including risk-based verification, evidence required at each testing layer, exploratory testing, and documented decisions about what is not tested.
  • Design maintainable automation architecture, including frameworks, fixtures, and shared patterns for reliable parallel execution in systems with concurrency, asynchronous behavior, and eventual consistency.
  • Make test feedback actionable by owning execution speed, gating, failure classification, and flake discipline.
  • Define synthetic-data strategy, isolation patterns, and CI protections that prevent PHI from entering non-production while providing deterministic test state.
  • Define testability, environment, observability, and data needs with Platform, and determine appropriate performance, resilience, accessibility, and security verification.
  • Establish AI-first quality practices, author versioned and reviewable agent conventions, set boundaries for agent actions without review, and assess generated tests critically.
  • Trace failing tests across services using logs, traces, and deployment context, and distinguish product, automation, data, and environment causes.
  • Communicate residual risk to Engineering and Product, including when shipping with a known gap is appropriate.
