Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), Web + Server — Find My

About The Position

The Find My team builds a seamless, private, and secure way for people to locate their devices and personal items and share location with friends and family, serving hundreds of millions of users worldwide. The team is a fast-paced, collaborative group that partners across hardware, software, and privacy to deliver reliable experiences. As an SDET on the Find My team, you will own test strategy and automation across backend services and web experiences. You will partner closely with engineers to shift testing left, integrate reliable automation into CI/CD pipelines, and continuously improve quality. The role also expects comfort using modern AI tooling, including GenAI and AI-assisted coding and testing tools, to accelerate test authoring, triage, and coverage while applying sound judgment and human verification where needed.

Requirements

At least 5 years of experience in software quality engineering or testing, with a strong focus on automation.
Hands-on automation experience across backend/API and web; breadth across both is strongly preferred.
Proficiency in at least one object-oriented language, such as Java, Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, or Go, or an equivalent language.
Experience automating API or microservice testing, including unit, component, integration, or contract tests, and working with REST/JSON.
Experience with web UI automation using Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, or similar tools.
Solid understanding of the software development lifecycle, testing methodologies, and the test pyramid.
Experience designing test plans, assessing risk, filing defects, and reporting test results.
Experience building and maintaining automated test suites that scale.
Experience with CI/CD pipelines and version control.
BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
Comfort using AI/GenAI-assisted development and testing tools, such as Claude or Copilot, in day-to-day work.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to report quality status and risk clearly to technical and non-technical partners.

Nice To Haves

Experience with modern web automation frameworks such as Playwright and cross-browser testing.
Depth in backend/REST API testing, including contract testing tools, service virtualization, mocking, and performance/load testing.
Experience testing location-, privacy-, or security-sensitive features.
Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools such as logs, metrics, and tracing to diagnose service failures.
Experience with containerized test environments and cloud-based test infrastructure.
Exposure to Kubernetes, AWS, or other cloud infrastructure.
Understanding of operating systems and networking fundamentals.
Experience with CI/CD and the build and release process for web or service projects.
Passion for clean code and object-oriented design patterns.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain scalable test automation frameworks across backend services and web.
Automate functional, contract, integration, and performance testing for APIs and microservices powering Find My.
Build and maintain web UI automation for browser experiences, using tools such as Playwright.
Break down complex cross-layer features into comprehensive, risk-based test plans and reliable automated tests.
Partner with developers early to influence testability, catch defects sooner, and reduce manual effort.
Build, monitor, and continuously improve CI/CD test pipelines so test suites remain fast, stable, and trustworthy.
Investigate failures across the stack, file clear and actionable defects, and drive them to resolution with appropriate data and reproduction steps.
Validate functionality, reliability, and privacy across browsers, environments, and network conditions.
Explore and adopt GenAI and AI-assisted tools to accelerate test creation, triage, and coverage.
Report quality signals and risks clearly to support confident release decisions.
Collaborate with technical and non-technical partners across Apple.
