About The Position

Netflix is seeking a Software Engineer in Test to join the TV & Web Player Developer Experience and Release Quality team. The team owns end-to-end testing, build systems, CI/CD, and supporting infrastructure and tooling to enable fast, reliable developer workflows and high-quality releases for Netflix playback clients across web browsers, TVs, and streaming devices. The role focuses on feature and performance test automation. You will develop test strategies and automated tests for player features, maintain existing test suites, assess playback performance across devices, and improve how test automation is developed so coverage keeps pace with releases and results can reliably gate merges and releases. You will also support release and live-event readiness, communicate quality and reliability risks, and participate in on-call rotations for player client releases.

Requirements

  • Deep experience ensuring the quality of consumer web or device applications at scale.
  • High proficiency in JavaScript and TypeScript.
  • Software engineering skills to build test frameworks, harnesses, and tooling from the ground up.
  • A track record of improving how teams write tests, beyond simply increasing test volume.
  • Applied AI tooling in a testing context, such as generating tests, triaging failures, analyzing flakiness, or closing coverage gaps.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD systems such as Jenkins, Spinnaker, or GitHub Actions, and ability to debug the pipelines tests run in.
  • Curiosity about audio, video, and streaming, including adaptive bitrate streaming, DRM, codecs, and browser media APIs such as MSE and EME.
  • Understanding of browser and TV device diversity and how to validate consistent playback and performance across device generations and capabilities.
  • Analytical, data-driven approach to identifying root causes and reasoning about interactions among client, network, and backend systems.
  • Clear communication and ability to collaborate with player engineers, test and release engineers, product managers, and data science partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with performance testing and profiling of client applications, ideally on resource-constrained devices, and producing stable, repeatable measurements that catch regressions.
  • Exposure to A/B testing or experimentation workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with player engineers early in feature development to define end-to-end and functional test strategies, including member scenarios, merge or release gates, test streams, data, and upstream support.
  • Build automated performance tests and benchmarks for measures such as playback startup time, rebuffering, memory, CPU, and frame rate across a representative range of TV devices; identify regressions and help engineers find root causes.
  • Develop test frameworks, harnesses, and reusable tooling, and apply AI-assisted approaches to make tests faster to write, easier to maintain, and more trustworthy.
  • Work with Netflix test and developer tools teams to bring new capabilities into testing workflows and influence their roadmaps.
  • Build utilities for realistic end-to-end testing, including tools to manipulate test streams and services that provide reliable, repeatable test data; partner with upstream teams to secure needed hooks and support.
  • Own and improve test metrics, including critical scenario coverage, escaped defects, flake rate, and performance baselines, and use them to guide priorities.
  • Reduce flaky tests, known issues, and test runtime, and retire tests that no longer affect decisions.
  • Work with build-system and CI/CD pipeline owners to integrate automated tests as reliable, well-understood quality gates.
  • Support release and live-event readiness by communicating quality, performance, and reliability risks and their impact to engineering, product, and release stakeholders; participate in on-call rotations for player client releases.
  • Monitor A/B test variants and analyze metrics to validate playback quality and client stability before full production rollouts.
  • Demonstrate Netflix’s values and help ensure every team member’s voice is heard.
