Software Engineer in Test 5 - Android Player

Netflix•Los Gatos, CA
•$266,000 - $442,000

About The Position

Netflix is seeking a Software Engineer in Test to join the Android Player team, which owns Android app playback outside the UI, including streaming, offline downloads, and foundations for live events and ad-supported viewing. The role owns how playback quality is verified across thousands of Android devices for a client that ships weekly. Current priorities include expanding automation for live and advertising, maintaining a reliable shared device lab, and making test results trustworthy enough to block merges or releases. The role owns Android Player test strategy across unit, integration, and end-to-end testing; builds automation frameworks, tooling, and infrastructure; and expands automated coverage for live events and ad-supported playback. It requires thoughtful management of device coverage and lab capacity, reducing test flakiness and runtime, and removing tests that no longer inform decisions. The engineer supports release and live-event readiness, including participation in the on-call rotation behind live gating, and raises quality across the team through code review, mentorship, and influence. The role also calls for exemplifying Netflix's culture and values.

Requirements

  • Deep experience ensuring the quality of consumer Android applications at scale.
  • Strong experience with Kotlin, Java, and the Android SDK.
  • Software engineering ability to build test frameworks, harnesses, and CI tooling.
  • Experience testing across layers, with judgment in placing tests among unit, Robolectric, integration, screenshot, and on-device suites.
  • Knowledge of audio/video and streaming, including adaptive streaming, DRM, codecs, hardware and software decoding, and player frameworks such as ExoPlayer.
  • First-hand knowledge of the Android device ecosystem, including SoC and OEM hardware capabilities and playback across device generations and price points.
  • Experience applying AI tooling in testing, such as test generation, failure triage, flakiness analysis, or coverage-gap reduction.
  • Ability to use data and judgment to decide what to automate and what to keep manual.
  • Systems-thinking ability to reason about interactions between client, network, and backend in playback issues.
  • Clear communication and ability to collaborate across UI, iOS and TV Player engineering, product management, and data science.
