Every year CHEO helps more than 500,000 children and youth from Eastern Ontario, western Quebec, Nunavut and Northern Ontario. The Social Work After Hours Service offers an urgent response for cases that cannot wait until the next working day. The social worker provided crisis assessment and intervention in regards to sexual abuse, trauma, acute illness, new diagnosis, death or other complex biopsychosocial situations. The Social worker carries a pager and must report to the hospital within 45 minutes when services are required. After Hours social workers must be available to work evenings, nights, weekends and statutory holidays and which may include day time hours. As part of the casual pool, the social worker will offer support in various areas of the hospital as needed. The Social Worker addresses the patient and family’s psychosocial factor that are relevant to diagnosis, illness or hospitalization through assessment and counseling, building community relationships, coordinating social services, education, research, and teaching.

Requirements

  • Vulnerable Sector Check (Essential)
  • B.S.W. graduate will be considered if other qualifications are met (Essential)
  • Member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (Essential)
  • Sound knowledge and experience in crisis, trauma and bereavement intervention (Essential)
  • Strong problem-solving skills (Essential)
  • Experience working within an interdisciplinary team (Essential)
  • Fluent in both English and French (Essential)
  • Strong interpersonal and team work skills (Essential)

Nice To Haves

  • M.S.W. graduate from an accredited university program in social work (Preferred)
  • Minimum of 2 years experience within a pediatric or health care setting (Preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Provides crisis assessments and interventions to patients and their families.
  • Offer consultation to hospital physicians and staff on various issues such as child maltreatment, conflict, and mental health.
  • Coordinate emergency resources in regards to transportation, accommodations and meals.
  • Liaises with community partners, including Child Welfare Authorities, Police and other hospitals.
  • Works collaboratively with other professionals.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team rounds providing knowledge and expertise in the treatment planning of the psychological, social and emotional needs of children and youth.
