About The Position

The Equity Project (TEP) Charter School is seeking a middle school Social Studies Teacher to help provide a world-class education to students from historically underserved communities. Social Studies is one of TEP’s three program pillars, alongside Academics and Arts and Athletics. The teacher will build a positive, inclusive classroom that encourages a genuine interest in Social Studies and develops a community of engaged learners. Teachers use innovative strategies, technology, and real-world applications to bring history to life, guiding students to interpret and evaluate historical evidence rather than simply memorize dates. The teacher will teach one 45-minute Social Studies block each day to all students at one grade level. TEP middle school teachers teach one subject to one grade level in a given year, though assignments may change from one school year to the next. The role is based in TEP’s Washington Heights/Inwood school building, which includes innovative classrooms, a full gymnasium, a high-tech performing arts space, and an indoor/outdoor café where meals are prepared fresh daily for students and staff. TEP offers a teacher-focused work year with extended rest breaks and professional development institutes, along with opportunities for professional growth. Applicants must submit a resume, a cover letter, and one teaching-and-learning submission: a portfolio showing student work and progress, class assessment data, or an original curricular tool, each accompanied by a written narrative as specified in the application instructions.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of lead teaching experience, including at least 2 years in grades 4–9.
  • Lead teaching experience must be in a public charter school, traditional public school, or private school setting.
  • Ability to develop and implement engaging, standards-aligned Social Studies lesson plans for middle school students.
  • Outstanding verbal ability and strong communication skills.
  • Inclusive and responsive classroom management practices.
  • Alignment with TEP’s mission of providing a world-class education to historically under-resourced student communities.
  • Applicants without New York State teaching certification must identify and present a pathway to obtain it in their application.
  • Applicants must submit an up-to-date resume and a well-written cover letter highlighting their interest in joining the TEP community.
  • Applicants must submit one teaching-and-learning portfolio option: a portfolio of student work, assessment data for an entire class, or an original curricular tool developed by the applicant; the submission must include a written narrative as described in the posting.
