About The Position

The Social Media Strategist is a dynamic role at Colorado Mesa University (CMU) focused on owning the university's day-to-day presence across its six main social channels (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, YouTube) and emerging platforms. This role is responsible for developing and executing social media strategies, creating engaging content, and leading a team of campus contributors and student support staff. The goal is to build energy around the university, tell compelling stories, and support CMU's mission through creative social media management, aligning organic social efforts with paid campaigns and admissions milestones.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university
  • 2-3+ years of experience managing social media for a brand (preferably in higher education, but not required)
  • Ability to write, edit and proof with attention to audience, tone and nuance.
  • Experience in creating content (videos, photos, feature stories) for use on social media, websites or advertising.
  • Demonstrated experience with current and developing social media channels and social media management software.
  • Organized enough to run a calendar, but flexible enough to pivot when necessary
  • Passion for storytelling, community building, and brand building
  • Strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure consistency, creativity, and strategy are implemented across CMU’s social channels.
  • Develop and execute a cohesive social media strategy aligned with market cycles and enrollment goals.
  • Identify opportunities to break through the noise of social media and drive organic growth.
  • Align organic social strategy with paid advertising cycles and admissions milestones to drive enrollments, using data-driven insights.
  • Implement hands-on video or photography skills to create engaging social media content.
  • Work with a team to develop creative concepts and campaigns and oversee their implementation.
  • Utilize content creation platforms that optimize clickable and watchable content.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage UGC content that highlights student experiences.
  • Assemble and lead a team of campus-wide content contributors from multiple departments.
  • Hire and lead a team of students who support trending videos and reels as well as UGC content.
  • Manage DMs and comments to create a personalized, responsive brand experience.
  • Actively engage with the community to build loyalty and strengthen engagement across channels.
