About The Position

WOWT First Alert 6 is seeking a hybrid social media strategist and newsroom assignment editor to lead the station’s weekend digital presence and support newsroom coverage when breaking news occurs. The role owns the station’s online voice and audience engagement across platforms in Omaha, combining social media strategy with timely, accurate assignment-desk work.

The position collaborates with the Digital Director on social strategy, monitors sources for developing and breaking news, and helps coordinate newsroom response. It also edits and repurposes video and graphics for digital platforms and supports weekend reporters and on-air talent in strengthening their social media presence. The schedule includes weekend shifts and three weekdays.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience successfully engaging social audiences and converting users across digital platforms.
• At least 2 years of newsroom experience.
• Ability to work well under pressure.
• Ability to edit video in digital formats and create quick, eye-catching graphics.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a firm grasp of AP Style.
• Ability to consider how stories will appear on a smartphone screen.
• Willingness to investigate, make calls, and verify facts.
• Ability to thrive in the fast-paced environment of a weekend newsroom.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Digital Director to develop and execute a high-energy social media strategy.
• Serve as the primary newsroom contact during the shift and manage the assignment desk with urgency and precision.
• Monitor scanners, social media feeds, emails, and viewer tips to identify breaking news.
• Help define and maintain a unique, authoritative, and engaging voice for WOWT.
• Repurpose and edit platform-appropriate videos and graphics from daily coverage.
• Work with weekend on-air talent and reporters to improve their social media presence.
• Dispatch photographers and reporters to developing stories.
• Review metrics and social trends to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategy.
