About The Position

WOWT First Alert 6 is seeking a hybrid social media strategist and newsroom assignment editor to lead its weekend digital presence and help manage weekend news coverage in Omaha. The role is the newsroom’s primary point of contact during assigned shifts, monitoring breaking-news sources, coordinating coverage, and maintaining WOWT’s online voice across platforms. The position also works with the Digital Director, newsroom staff, weekend on-air talent, and reporters to develop social strategy and strengthen their social media presence. The schedule includes weekend shifts and three weekdays.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience successfully engaging social audiences and converting users across digital platforms.
• At least 2 years of newsroom experience.
• Ability to work well under pressure.
• Ability to edit video in digital formats and create quick, eye-catching graphics.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a firm grasp of AP Style.
• Ability to consider how stories appear on smartphone screens.
• Willingness to dig, call, and verify information to establish accurate facts.
• Ability to work weekend shifts and three weekdays.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Digital Director to develop and execute a high-energy social media strategy.
• Serve as the primary newsroom point of contact during assigned shifts and manage the assignment desk.
• Monitor scanners, social media feeds, email, and viewer tips to identify breaking news.
• Help define and maintain WOWT’s unique, authoritative, and engaging online voice.
• Repurpose and edit platform-appropriate videos and graphics from daily coverage.
• Work with weekend on-air talent and reporters to improve their social media presence.
• Dispatch photographers and reporters to developing stories.
• Review metrics and social trends to assess the effectiveness of the strategy.
• Verify facts by digging and making calls as needed.
