Social Media Coordinator

Book HarvestDurham, NC
Hybrid

About The Position

Book Harvest, an award-winning children’s literacy nonprofit scaling nationally, is seeking a Social Media Coordinator to bring our mission to life across digital platforms and in-person moments — through compelling content, authentic storytelling, and a sharp visual eye. This full-time position is a key member of the External Relations team and reports to the Chief External Relations Officer. This role is responsible for managing Book Harvest’s social media presence across all platforms, producing a weekly blog, and capturing photo and video content that reflects the energy and heart of our programs and community. The ideal candidate leads with their own creativity and critical thinking, using technology as a tool rather than a shortcut. This is a hybrid position; in a typical week, approximately 40–50% of the work will take place at Book Harvest’s office at 2501 University Drive in Durham, NC and/or in the community. Typical work hours span Monday–Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends required for events and content capture opportunities.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience managing organizational social media accounts across multiple platforms, including Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok, and YouTube.
  • Strong visual design skills — beyond template use — with a confident understanding of color, composition, layout, and brand application; proficiency in Canva and Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with experience producing content for public audiences; blogging or editorial experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with a camera (DSLR or mirrorless preferred) and a genuine interest in documentary-style photography that captures people and moments authentically.
  • Video capture experience required; video editing experience strongly preferred, or demonstrated willingness and aptitude to develop this skill.
  • Familiarity with social media analytics tools and comfort interpreting and applying engagement data.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite; experience with project management tools such as Monday.com is a plus.
  • A human-first approach to content creation: uses AI as a supporting tool, not a substitute for original thinking, voice, or creative judgment.
  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate relevant experience managing social media accounts, producing content, and working within a brand identity.

  • Produce one blog post per week, either by writing original content or by soliciting and editing contributions from community members, program partners, and Book Harvest staff.
  • Maintain Book Harvest’s editorial calendar, ensuring a consistent and well-paced content rhythm across platforms and campaigns.
  • Track all media coverage and publicity in our shared Monday.com board, keeping records current and organized.
  • Track and report on social media analytics, using data to inform content strategy and share insights with the External Relations team.
  • Serve as Book Harvest’s primary photographer at events, programs, and staff moments, building an organized and accessible library of high-quality image assets.
  • Capture video content across contexts and edit — or actively develop the skills to edit — video for use on social media and YouTube.
  • Design promotional graphics and visual collateral using tools such as Canva and Adobe Creative Suite, producing materials that are visually compelling, on-brand, and ready for use across digital and print channels.
  • Collaborate with the Chief External Relations Officer on visual campaigns and brand merchandise (t-shirts, hats, bags), coordinating production with printers and vendors as needed.
  • Ensure that key content — including social media posts, blog posts, and digital campaigns — is accurately translated as needed, coordinating with translators or bilingual team members to maintain voice and brand integrity across languages.
