About The Position

The State of Connecticut Military Department (CTMD) is accepting applications for a Skilled Maintainer position located Orange, CT. We are a unique dual-status agency, having both federal and state missions. The CTMD’S primary public responsibilities are: (1) To support the CT National Guard enabling the National Guard to provide ready units for Federal or State requirements; (2) To train, resource and coordinate state emergency response assets, and; (3) To plan for and protect citizens and their property in times of war, terrorism, invasion, rebellion, riot or disaster. The Connecticut Military Department (CTMD) is committed to conducting military operations in an environmentally friendly manner and will continue to perform its mission while looking for new ways to reduce pollution-generating activities and to preserve and enhance all of its valuable training lands.

Requirements

Two (2) years of experience in one of the following areas: One of the skilled trades; Landscape maintenance or vegetable gardening; Operation of motor trucks or large buses. The experience area should reflect the needs of the position.
Considerable knowledge of methods, tools, equipment, materials and procedures of specific trade or work area concerned.
Knowledge of maintenance problems and their proper handling.
Skills manual and machine operations of trade or work area skills.
Interpersonal skills.
Oral and written communication skills.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Utilize computer software.

Nice To Haves

Experience assisting a trades person in the performance of minor facility maintenance, including, but not limited to: carpentry, replacing light bulbs, filters, etc.
Experience performing grounds maintenance, including, but not limited to: mowing, weeding, raking, shoveling and snow and ice removal.
Experience using, setting up, and maintaining basic hand/power tools necessary for the performance of skilled custodial and grounds maintenance.
Experience maintaining electronic records including but not limited to: preventative maintenance, vehicle assignments, purchase requests, researching parts and materials and creating/maintaining work orders.
Possession and maintaining of a valid state driver's license.
Experience operating and maintaining zero turn mowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, chain saws and other landscaping equipment.
Experience operating heavy-duty pickup trucks with plow and/or sander equipment, wheeled loaders, skid steers, dump trucks (5-ton capacity and larger).
Experience using Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, TEAMS) Adobe Acrobat Pro for filling out forms and documents.

Responsibilities

Performing one or more tasks of a skilled nature (requiring prior experience or training, below the level of a specialized trades worker which would give the incumbent proficiency in required knowledges, skills and abilities on the first day of the job) in addition to performing lower level duties.
Only complex tasks should be learned on the job.
Tasks performed will be in one or several of the following areas: Building and equipment maintenance (operational and remedial) including the operation of trucks of five (5) ton or greater capacity or complex motorized equipment; Grounds care as a supervisor and/or specialized landscaping functions; Assists Qualified Craft Workers or other higher level employees in the trades areas.
