About The Position

Copper Mountain Resort is seeking a Ski Patrol Volunteer for the Winter 26/27 season. This role is crucial in ensuring a safe skiing environment for guests and employees by providing medical assistance, maintaining trail safety, performing sweeps, and handling duty station responsibilities. The position requires a high level of decision-making and involves direct guest interaction. Volunteers will be trained in various aspects of ski patrol, including medical assessment, toboggan running, incident investigation, snow safety, lift evacuation, and skier education. The role also involves inspecting equipment, collaborating with other departments, and orienting new volunteers. As an ambassador of Copper Mountain, the volunteer is expected to uphold the company's culture and provide excellent guest experiences.

Requirements

  • Basic computer skills.
  • EMT-B certification (or in the process of obtaining).
  • American Heart Association CPR certification.
  • Strong snowboard or alpine skiing skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry toboggans weighing as much as 70 lbs.
  • Ability to ski in difficult conditions.
  • Ability to volunteer in cold and often inclement conditions, at high elevations.
  • Ability to carry and transport unwieldy materials such as tower pads, medical equipment, etc.
  • No current physical limitations.
  • Ability to volunteer in high altitude adverse cold weather environmental conditions.
  • Ability to hear and speak clearly for beacon signals, skier assistance, and radio/telephone communication.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Technical rope experience.
  • Willingness to undergo a criminal background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous patrolling experience.
  • Previous employment by Copper Mountain.
  • Mountaineering experience (e.g., Outward Bound).
  • Experience within the medical field.
  • Industry experience (e.g., ski instructor, lift operator, trail crew).

Responsibilities

  • Provide and ensure a reasonably safe skiing environment for guests and fellow employees.
  • Provide medical assistance, skier safety, trail checks and sweeps, and duty station responsibilities.
  • Learn all trail names, mountain phones, mountain roads, and other patrol-specific areas.
  • Use a mountain radio and follow patrol radio protocol.
  • Perform medical assessment, treatment, and toboggan running.
  • Respond to likely events in a winter alpine environment, including triage and multi-system trauma.
  • Conduct incident investigations, preserve facts, and complete forms and records.
  • Ensure a reasonably safe skiing environment through trail checks, openings/closings, early season preparation, obstacle marking, signage, sweeps, and special race preparation and coverage.
  • Be familiar with terrain where avalanche search and rescue is likely.
  • Perform ground-crew evacuation of people from lifts in the event of a breakdown.
  • Enforce the Colorado Skier Safety Act, including boundary management, safe skiing, and speeder control.
  • Be visible to the public for skier information.
  • Participate in ongoing training and demonstrate proficiency in all areas of patrolling.
  • Inspect equipment, including duty stations, toboggans, medical supplies, search and rescue gear, radios, and rescue beacons.
  • Perform duties at assigned stations (Motel 6, PHQ, and Timberline).
  • Use computer and software for incident reporting.
  • Integrate with other Copper Mountain departments for smoother functioning.
  • Orient volunteers in mountain safety awareness.
  • Function as an ambassador of Copper Mountain, modeling and sharing the Copper “culture”.
  • Uphold a professional image.
  • Strive to exceed guest expectations and create memories.
  • Accept new responsibilities and transfer others as the role evolves.
