About The Position

The Skate Instructor is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading safe, engaging, and age-appropriate learn-to-skate and/or Skate Abilities programs for children ages 2–12 years. This role delivers high-quality instructional skating programs focused on developing fundamental skating skills, confidence, balance, coordination, and overall physical literacy in a fun and supportive environment. The Skate Instructor creates inclusive, developmentally appropriate learning experiences that encourage skill progression, active participation, and a lifelong enjoyment of skating while ensuring participant safety both on and off the ice.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching, coaching, or instructing skating programs in a recreational, educational, sport, camp, or community-based setting.
  • Experience participating in or coaching skating-related disciplines such as learn-to-skate, figure skating, hockey, ringette, power skating, speed skating, or similar ice sports is considered an asset.
  • Certification in Standard/Intermediate First Aid & CPR Level C is preferred.
  • Certification or training in recognized skating instruction and coaching programs such as Skate Canada Coaching Certification, NCCP, Hockey Canada Coaching Certifications, Ringette Canada Coaching Certifications, Learn-to-Skate Instructor Training, or equivalent is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with young children in a recreational instructional environment and adapting lessons to varying skill levels and learning styles is considered an asset.
  • Background Check: Trico Centre will initiate a comprehensive criminal background check for all new hires. A previous check will be accepted provided it is dated within the past 6 months
  • Related certifications in child development, inclusion, physical literacy, HIGH FIVE®, behavioral guidance, leadership, or mental health are considered an asset.
  • Post-secondary education, certification, or coursework in Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport and Exercise Studies, Child and Youth Care, Education, or a related field is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering skating, recreation, or sport programs.
  • Experience working with children, youth, and families.
  • Ability to develop and implement lesson plans for varying ages and skill levels.
  • Knowledge of skating fundamentals and progressive skill development.
  • Ability to assess participant performance and provide constructive feedback.
  • Strong record-keeping and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Strong understanding of participant safety and risk management practices.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with children and foster their engagement through enthusiastic leadership, creativity, and a child-centered approach.
  • Strong organizational, time management, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with children, families, colleagues, and supervisors.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while demonstrating professionalism, sound judgment, and initiative.
  • Punctual and dependable.

  • Communicate regularly and professionally with caregivers about program details, children’s progress and any concerns.
  • Collaborate with fellow staff members to support a cohesive program experience and share best practices.
