About The Position

Trico Centre is looking for an enthusiastic and skilled Power Skate Instructor to join our team. The Power Skate Instructor is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading safe, engaging, and age-appropriate Power Skate programs for children and youth. This role delivers high-quality skating instruction focused on improving skating efficiency, power, speed, agility, balance, edge control, and overall athletic performance for participants involved in hockey, ringette, and other ice sports. The Power Skate Instructor creates inclusive and developmentally appropriate learning experiences that support skill progression, confidence building, and participant success while ensuring safety both on and off the ice.

Requirements

Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching, coaching, or instructing skating programs in a recreational, educational, sport, camp, or community-based setting.
Minimum of 1 year of experience teaching power skating, hockey skating development, ringette skating development, figure skating skills, or comparable advanced skating instruction.
Demonstrated experience delivering power skating, sport-specific skating, recreation, or athletic development programs.
Strong understanding of skating mechanics, edge work, stride development, acceleration, agility, stopping techniques, transitions, and overall skating performance.
Experience working with children, youth, and athletes in a coaching or instructional environment.
Ability to develop and implement progressive lesson plans for varying ages and skill levels.
Ability to assess participant performance and provide constructive feedback for skill development.
Background Check: Trico Centre will initiate a comprehensive criminal background check for all new hires. A previous check will be accepted provided it is dated within the past 6 months

Nice To Haves

Certification in Standard/Intermediate First Aid & CPR Level C is preferred.
Certification or training in recognized coaching and skating instruction programs such as Skate Canada Coaching Certification, NCCP, Hockey Canada Coaching Certifications, Ringette Canada Coaching Certifications, Power Skate Instructor Training, or equivalent is strongly preferred.
Experience coaching hockey, ringette, speed skating, figure skating, or other skating-based sports is considered a strong asset.
Experience adapting instruction for participants with diverse learning styles, abilities, and skill levels is considered an asset.
Related certifications in physical literacy, sport performance, athlete development, HIGH FIVE®, behavioral guidance, leadership, inclusion, or mental health are considered an asset.
Post-secondary education, certification, or coursework in Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport and Exercise Studies, Coaching, Education, or a related field is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

Plan and deliver safe, engaging, and age-appropriate Power Skate lessons.
Design progressive lesson plans focused on skating performance and athletic development.
Teach and reinforce proper skating mechanics, balance, agility, acceleration, speed, edge control, transitions, and stopping techniques.
Adapt instruction to accommodate varying skill levels, ages, and learning styles.
Use demonstrations, drills, skill progressions, and positive coaching techniques to support participant development.
Promote confidence, skill progression, and participant enjoyment in a challenging and supportive environment.
Assess participant skating abilities and provide individualized feedback.
Monitor participant progress throughout the program and modify instruction as required.
Identify strengths and areas for improvement and provide constructive coaching strategies.
Encourage participant goal setting, effort, and continuous improvement.
Support athlete development through age-appropriate training methods and positive reinforcement.
Maintain a safe, clean and organized activity environment.
Communicate regularly and professionally with caregivers about program details, children’s progress and any concerns.
Collaborate with fellow staff members to support a cohesive program experience and share best practices
