About The Position

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire a Site Technician 2 at the Union County State Fish & Wildlife Area. This position will perform maintenance of vehicles and equipment, maintain grounds and recreational programs, operating grain trucks, backhoes, road graders and heavy farming machinery over 80 h.p. to carry out the wildlife farming program, maintain hunter check stations, trap and band waterfowl, clean restrooms, mow grass, plow snow and at times provide guidance and training to seasonal staff. Union County State Fish & Wildlife Area encompasses 6,202 acres in the Lower Mississippi River bottomlands division of Illinois. This Wildlife area is a haven for many diverse forms of wildlife such as flocks of wintering Canada geese other waterfowl, White-tailed deer, bald and golden eagles. Requirements

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Requires appropriate, valid Driver's License.
  • Requires ability to obtain pesticide operator's license within 6 months of employment.
  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis.
  • Requires physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds.
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds.
  • Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.
  • Requires ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
  • Two (2) years of experience in following written and oral instructions.
  • Two (2) years of experience in informing visitors of site facilities, programs, rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Regularly operates heavy equipment to carry out the wildlife farming program.
  • Performs semi-skilled and unskilled maintenance and program support tasks.
  • Participates in the hunting program at the site.
  • Assists with building and grounds maintenance using such equipment as hand mowers, bushhog and chain saws.
  • Performs routine maintenance on site vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists with safety of site visitors.
  • Assists with the waterfowl program.
  • Seasonally provides leadership and direction to small crews of lower-level site workers performing unskilled routine maintenance tasks.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
