Site Reliability Engineer

SAIC•Town of Cortlandt, NY
•Onsite

About The Position

SAIC is seeking a highly motivated Site Reliability Engineer to support the mission-critical Joint Fires Network (JFN), which enables joint planning, targeting, precision strikes, and communications. The SRE will ensure the reliability, scalability, performance, maintainability, and operational availability of JFN and related experimentation systems. The role uses performance metrics, dashboards, and system logs to monitor system health, identify trends and potential issues, and support data-driven operational improvements. This is an on-site position in Camp Smith, Hawaii. The position supports operational, experimentation, development, and testing resources, including the JFN MLS Operational Architecture and JMIE MLS Experimentation Architecture. It encompasses infrastructure through application layers, incident response, automation, CI/CD processes, Infrastructure as Code, DevSecOps workflows, performance optimization, and communication of system status to stakeholders. The engineer will collaborate with helpdesk staff, network engineers, system integrators, application providers, and program leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and five or more years of experience, master’s degree and three or more years of experience, or PhD and zero years of related experience.
  • At least five years of progressive experience in Computer Science, Networking, and Information Technology, including Systems Engineering, DevSecOps, and application lifecycle management.
  • Track record designing and implementing governance processes for engineering environments.
  • Experience building and maintaining dashboards, alerting, and monitoring solutions that provide real-time and historical observability into system health.
  • Strong experience administering Linux/Unix and Windows systems in virtualized and cloud environments.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, configuration management, and deployment automation tools such as Kubernetes, Ansible, Terraform, and Jenkins.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and hybrid cloud deployment strategies.
  • Proficiency with monitoring, logging, and alerting tools such as Alloy, Blackbox Exporter, Prometheus, Grafana, and ELK Stack.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams and coordinate with application providers.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation abilities, including reporting project status to leadership.
  • Familiarity with modern IT frameworks and methodologies such as Agile and ITIL.
  • Understanding of business and technical alignment to achieve organizational goals.
  • U.S. citizenship and an active TS/SCI clearance.
  • IAT Level II certification.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure maximum availability, stability, and health of operational systems and program resources supporting operations, experimentation, development, and testing.
  • Support the JFN MLS Operational Architecture, including nodes, hub, network, software baseline, and CI/CD apparatus such as IL-7 Cloud.
  • Support the JMIE MLS Experimentation Architecture, including labs, systems, network, software baseline, and CI/CD apparatus such as IL-5 Cloud.
  • Maintain availability and reliability across infrastructure and application layers, from system inception through incident resolution.
  • Monitor system health proactively, analyze trends, and predict system behavior to reduce downtime and latency.
  • Serve as an escalation point during incidents, lead troubleshooting, and conduct root cause analysis to reduce Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR).
  • Establish and improve engineering processes and tools for system-status visibility using platform, data, and application-layer logging.
  • Establish Standard Operations Procedures for using CI/CD pipelines and automated testing tools to audit, verify, update, patch, and manage systems.
  • Develop, maintain, and automate repetitive processes to reduce manual support for daily operational verification and validation of critical capabilities.
  • Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to simplify provisioning, scaling, and fault recovery for JFN environments.
  • Establish a communications plan to keep stakeholders, program leadership, and others informed about system status.
  • Identify deficiencies in DevSecOps workflows and design solutions that support Technical Operations.
  • Profile system performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement optimizations.
  • Collaborate with helpdesk, network engineers, and system integrators on escalation and incident-response best practices to support system reliability.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations on findings and share insights with stakeholders.
  • Stay current with developments in automated testing, distributed databases, software-defined networking, container orchestration, and DevSecOps.
