About The Position

Mount Sinai Queens is seeking a Site Chair, Department of Medicine, Site Chief, Division of Hospital Medicine. The Mount Sinai Health System includes several hospitals throughout New York, including Mount Sinai Queens (MSQ). The MSQ Department of Medicine is part of the Samuel Bronfman Department of Medicine, the largest academic department in the Mount Sinai Health System and the largest academic department of medicine in the country. As the Site Chair for Mount Sinai Queens (the “Department”), you are responsible for the clinical, educational, and research activities of the Department. As Site Chief for the Division of Hospital Medicine, you are responsible for the recruitment, development, mentorship, and performance of the faculty within the Division. The faculty in the Department work in multiple divisions, including but not limited to Gastroenterology, General Internal Medicine, Hospital Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Pulmonary, Rheumatology, Nephrology, Neurology, Endocrinology, and Psychiatry. The Site Chair will interact extensively with hospital leadership at Mount Sinai Queens, as well as with leadership of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and other leaders throughout the Mount Sinai Health System. The Site Chair is the academic leader of the Department and will lead and direct the research and educational functions of the Department as defined in the Department's mission statement. The Site Chair is responsible for advancing the Department's development as a nationally recognized clinical and clinical training program. S/he will mentor and foster faculty development as well as identify and recruit faculty that complement and enhance the Department's and institution's missions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide fiscal oversight to ensure a financially sound Department, oversee the development, implementation and monitoring of financial plans that reflect strategic initiatives and operational priorities of the Department that are consistent with institutional policies.
  • Work in conjunction with business development and Departmental senior leadership to identify areas of opportunity for expansion of Medical Specialties.
  • Oversee the development and management of existing and new practices.
  • Work to create a high-quality environment that provides opportunities for employed faculty and voluntary physicians.
  • As Site Chair, Internal Medicine oversee the quality of care on the Medicine inpatient service, in conjunction with the Medical Director of the Queens Network, the hospital's outpatient medical practices, and the Department's faculty practice.
  • Oversee the faculty practice of medicine physicians including process improvement, patient satisfaction, resource utilization, and revenue cycle enhancement.
  • Participate in the Medical Board as well as other appropriate hospital and System Committees
  • Assume a leadership role in updating bylaws and enforcing the bylaws of the Hospital including the credentialing of Medicine physicians.
  • Recommend faculty appointments, clinical privileges and other employment arrangements, as appropriate. Clinical privileges shall be processed through established medical staff channels.
  • The Site Chair is responsible for developing educational goals as needed and aligned with Residency Review Committee guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain training programs that comply with ABIM and Residency Review Committee requirements in anticipation of future site visits and official program evaluations, including ensuring appropriate patient volumes, inpatient and outpatient experiences, teaching, research, and documented periodic trainee evaluations.
  • Foster the career development of junior faculty members through mentorship and leadership by example.
  • Oversee the Quality of care on the inpatient service.
  • Recommending to the administration and staff in the Department the type and amount of equipment necessary for routine procedures and for related efforts, assuring through at least annual review, that such equipment is available.
  • Ensuring availability and quality of equipment necessary for provision of services.
  • Developing regulations for patient care requirements, patient safety, etc., as appropriate.
  • Ensuring that the quality and appropriateness all procedures performed in the Department are monitored and evaluated and that appropriate action based on findings is taken when necessary.
  • Ensuring that all specimens examined in the Department shall receive a comparable standard of care review.
  • Establishing a program of continuing education for all individuals who have privileges in the Department. The program shall include educational conferences, morbidity and mortality conferences, and in-service training and be based in part on the results of the evaluation of care as appropriate.
  • Participating in the development of policies relating to the functioning of all staff in the Department and the administration of various departments/services of the hospital, etc.
  • Oversight of the Advanced Practice Providers in the Department of Medicine.
  • Chair the Mortality Work Group; address system-level issues; represent the Department of Medicine at Root Cause Analyses (RCAs); review relevant patient grievances; and conduct peer reviews.
  • Oversee the Hospital Medicine program, including hiring, scheduling, program growth, professional development, and mentoring.
  • Responsible for the development of strategic plans and goals for the Division.
  • Lead key quality initiatives, including but not limited to length of stay (LOS), mortality, and readmission reduction.
  • Oversee all teaching aspects of the Division related to medical students, house staff, fellowship training, and continuing medical education. The educational program should include bedside teaching, didactic sessions, conference preparation, and a written core curriculum.
  • These duties may be modified from time to time by the System Chair or Chief Medical Officer of Mount Sinai Queens based on Institutional needs.
