About The Position

The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health seeks a visionary and collaborative leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Medical Physics. The Chair will provide strategic, academic, and administrative leadership across the department's research, education, clinical, and service missions.

Requirements

  • An academic background that qualifies for appointment at the rank of tenured Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement in medical physics or a closely related field
  • Proven leadership experience in a research-intensive academic setting, including the ability to articulate a strategic vision, build consensus, and drive organizational growth.
  • Demonstrated administrative experience, including oversight of personnel, budgets, and complex programs
  • Experience with accredited medical physics training programs (graduate, residency, and/or postdoctoral) and effectiveness in teaching, mentoring, and curriculum development
  • Demonstrated success and commitment to developing or expanding innovation in research, educational, or service programs
  • Commitment to fostering a sense of belonging across academic, clinical, and professional communities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative, transparent, and inclusive leadership style.
  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree(s).

  • Experience in a large, complex academic medical center environment.
  • Demonstrated history of strategic, forward-thinking leadership, including negotiating successfully and building stakeholder partnerships with industry and other external partners.
  • For an appointment at Associate Professor or Professor rank on tenure track, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the UW Divisional Committee guidelines for promotion or appointment to Associate or Professor on the tenure track.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and steward departmental budgets and resources aligned with priorities.
  • Maintain an active scholarly presence consistent with the candidate's expertise
  • Advance affiliated clinical programs and residency education, maintaining a strong professional culture that recognizes clinical physics as a valued and integral dimension of the department's mission
  • Represent the department to the School, university, professional organizations, and the broader medical physics community.
  • Lead and manage all departmental operations, including research, graduate education, residency training, clinical physics services, and entrepreneurship initiatives.
  • Lead thoughtful faculty recruitment with an emphasis on building a broadly representative, collaborative, and sustainable academic workforce that supports excellence in research, education, mentorship, and service across career stages and disciplines.
  • Build and sustain partnerships with clinical departments, industry, alumni, and donors.
  • Mentor and retain faculty and staff; foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and belonging.
