About The Position

These Teaching Assistant positions are only available to McGill graduate students. The School of Information Studies is hiring for multiple positions across various courses, including Foundations of Information Studies, Organization of Information, Information System Design, Information Behaviour and Resources, Introduction to Information Security and Cryptography, and Modern Software Exploitation and Defence. Responsibilities generally include providing office hours, assisting in marking assignments and exams, preparing class materials, assisting in class as needed (with opportunities to teach), monitoring online discussions, and maintaining course sites. Specific roles for the cybersecurity courses involve assisting the instructor in teaching an 8-week online course, helping students with technical problems, developing new course content, participating in online discussions, answering questions, guiding students with assignments and projects, and grading. The positions have varying contract dates and specific duties depending on the course.

Requirements

  • Ideally registered as a doctoral student at SIS
  • Graduate degree in information studies or related fields
  • Knowledge of the field of Information Studies and the subfields of Data Science, User Experience and Knowledge Management
  • Completed a MISt degree, or related graduate degree
  • Has taken 607 (Organization of Information) or an equivalent course (MISt degree level)
  • Excellent knowledge of the principles of information representation, tools for information access, metadata, and controlled vocabularies
  • Knowledge of cataloging rules, library classification systems like LC subject headings and DDC, archival description, databases, and other information organization systems, processes, and professions
  • Has taken Information Systems or an equivalent graduate course (MISt level)
  • Knowledge of information systems and programming concepts
  • Knowledge of relational database design
  • Has taken 619 (Information Behaviour and Resources) or an equivalent course (MISt degree level)
  • Proficiency with online databases and information search systems
  • Strong knowledge of systems security
  • Relevant work or research experience in cybersecurity
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Passion to be a good teacher
  • Strong knowledge of software security and malware analysis

Responsibilities

  • Provide office hours for students
  • Assist in marking assignments and final examination
  • Assist in preparing class materials
  • Assist in class as needed; TA will have opportunity to teach a class during the term
  • Monitor online class discussions
  • Maintain course site on myCourses
  • Assist instructor to teach an 8-week online course in cybersecurity
  • Help students solve technical problems
