Simulation Software Engineer

Barrios Technology•Houston, TX

About The Position

Barrios Technology is seeking a Simulation Software Engineer to develop and maintain simulation software for lunar surface operations, working with commercial spaceflight partners and programs involving organizations such as NASA, Intuitive Machines, Axiom Space, and Lockheed Martin. The role supports real-time and faster-than-real-time simulation environments, mission operations, flight software, ground systems, crew training, and mission readiness. The engineer will develop high-fidelity models of vehicle dynamics, environments, sensors, and system interfaces; support hardware-in-the-loop simulation integration and testing; and perform verification and validation of simulation models. The position also supports fault detection, isolation, and recovery (FDIR) testing through fault modeling and scenario development. The successful candidate will own work across the software lifecycle, contribute to Agile development and program reviews, and collaborate with hardware developers and subsystem engineers on a multidisciplinary team. The position requires U.S. citizenship and successful completion of a U.S. government background investigation. The selected applicant may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Work is generally in an office but may involve work inside or outside test facilities, commuting, and travel to other installations. Extended sitting, lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, and schedule adjustments during peak periods may be required. A post-offer, pre-employment drug test is a condition of employment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Technology, Physics, or Math from an accredited institution, plus two years of related software development experience.
  • Experience with simulation frameworks and tools such as Trick, Unreal Engine, or similar simulation environments.
  • Experience with 6-degrees-of-freedom (6-DOF) simulation development.
  • Proficiency in object-oriented programming, such as C/C++.
  • Experience in at least one of the following: spacecraft dynamics, thermal modeling, power systems, RF communications, sensor modeling (such as IMUs, star trackers, or LIDAR), or GNC integration.
  • Experience with Git-based platforms such as GitLab or GitHub and development tools such as JIRA.
  • Experience working on cross-disciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong communication, coordination, and presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with customers and stakeholders.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Must meet applicable eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
  • Ability to work outside the normal schedule and adjust the schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere and maintain professional behavior that supports productivity, teamwork, and cooperation.
  • Regular attendance in accordance with the established work schedule.
  • Must meet grooming and dress expectations and avoid creating safety risks or hazards.
  • May require sitting for extended periods, lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, and sufficient mobility to enter test-facility areas as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Hardware/software integration experience.
  • Experience with High Level Architecture (HLA) and Federation Object Models (FOMs).
  • Experience supporting spaceflight programs.
  • Familiarity with CMMI frameworks.
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies.
  • Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Grafana.
  • Master’s degree in a related field.

  • Perform verification and validation (V&V) of simulation models and enable FDIR testing through fault modeling and scenario development.
  • Support flight software, ground systems, and mission operations through simulation and test environments.
  • Contribute to crew training and mission readiness through realistic simulation scenarios.
  • Own the full software lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational support.
  • Contribute to Agile development cycles, including planning, integration, and verification activities.
  • Integrate within a multidisciplinary engineering team and interface with hardware developers and subsystem engineers.
  • Provide technical input during major milestones and program reviews.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
