Simulation Software Engineer

Barrios Technology•Houston, TX

About The Position

Barrios Technology is seeking a Simulation Software Engineer to support commercial spaceflight partners and contribute to space exploration programs involving organizations such as NASA, Intuitive Machines, Axiom Space, and Lockheed Martin. The role develops and maintains simulation software for lunar surface operations, including real-time and faster-than-real-time environments. It includes building high-fidelity models, supporting hardware-in-the-loop simulation, and providing simulation and test environments for flight software, ground systems, and mission operations. The engineer contributes to verification and validation, fault detection, isolation, and recovery testing, crew training, and mission readiness. The position owns the software lifecycle from design and implementation through testing, deployment, and operational support, and works within Agile development cycles and a multidisciplinary engineering team. The work is generally performed in an office environment, though tasks may involve inside or outside work and access to test facilities. Commuting or travel to other installations may be required. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation; eligibility for access to classified information may also be required. A post-offer, pre-employment drug test is a condition of employment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Technology, Physics, or Math from an accredited institution.
  • Five years of related software development experience.
  • Experience with simulation frameworks and tools such as Trick, Unreal Engine, or similar simulation environments.
  • Experience developing 6-degrees-of-freedom (6-DOF) simulations.
  • Proficiency in object-oriented programming, such as C/C++.
  • Experience in at least one of the following: spacecraft dynamics, thermal modeling, power systems, RF communications, sensor modeling (such as IMUs, star trackers, or LIDAR), or GNC integration.
  • Experience with Git-based platforms such as GitLab or GitHub and development tools such as JIRA.
  • Experience working on cross-disciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong communication, coordination, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with customers and stakeholders.
  • U.S. citizenship and successful completion of a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Must meet applicable eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods; lift and carry up to 25 lb; and access areas of test facilities when necessary.
  • Ability to maintain regular attendance and work outside the normal schedule or adjust schedules for peak periods and surge requirements when needed.
  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere and demonstrate professional behavior that promotes productivity, teamwork, and cooperation.
  • Appropriate grooming and dress that do not impose a safety risk or hazard.
  • Must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Nice To Haves

  • Hardware/software integration experience.
  • Experience with High Level Architecture (HLA) and Federation Object Models (FOMs).
  • Experience supporting spaceflight programs.
  • Familiarity with CMMI frameworks.
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies.
  • Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Grafana.
  • Master's degree in a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain simulation software for lunar surface operations in real-time and faster-than-real-time environments.
  • Design and implement high-fidelity models of vehicle dynamics, environments, sensors, and system interfaces.
  • Support hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) simulation development, integration, and testing.
  • Perform verification and validation of simulation models and enable FDIR testing through fault modeling and scenario development.
  • Support flight software, ground systems, and mission operations through simulation and test environments.
  • Contribute to crew training and mission readiness by developing realistic simulation scenarios.
  • Own the software lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational support.
  • Contribute to Agile development cycles, including planning, integration, and verification activities.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary engineering team and interface with hardware developers and subsystem engineers.
  • Provide technical input during major milestones and program reviews.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
