Signal Processor/Software Engineer 4

University of Washington•Seattle, WA
•$99,444 - $114,000

About The Position

The Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a research unit at the University of Washington, is hiring a Signal Processor/Software Engineer 4 for its Environmental and Information Systems Department. Reporting to the Senior Engineer, this role is part of the signal processing group and independently develops complex specialty software for engineering research programs, with a focus on imaging sonar array beamforming and sonar target detection, classification, localization, and tracking. The engineer updates existing code, designs and develops new applications, and converts MATLAB algorithms for real-time systems, including dedicated hardware and GPUs. The role works with system architects and the software development team in an agile environment, participates in design and code reviews, clarifies requirements with customers, and documents interfaces and code. The engineer tests their own code and performs regular system regression testing. The position also includes reporting weekly progress to the program manager, presenting system design information at program reviews, and conducting engineering field work to support system testing. It is a regular, 100% FTE position on first shift.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Sciences, or a similar engineering field, and at least four years of experience; equivalent education and/or experience may substitute where permitted.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a security clearance; the person hired must successfully obtain and maintain a Department of Defense Personnel Security Clearance.
  • Working knowledge of array signal processing.
  • Excellent computer skills and experience with Linux, C/C++, MATLAB, and Python.
  • Understanding of the software development process.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to interact cooperatively to solve problems.
  • Previous experience applying signal processing techniques to real-time systems.
  • Ability to solve problems independently using existing and emerging scientific or engineering knowledge.
  • Ability to develop new research or engineering methods and approaches and contribute to strategies for solving problems.
  • Strong organizational skills, documentation, attention to detail, communication, and time management.
  • Experience with software revision control systems.
