Signal Processor/Software Engineer 4

University of Washington•Seattle, WA

About The Position

The Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a research unit at the University of Washington, is hiring a Signal Processor/Software Engineer 4 for the Environmental and Information Systems Department. Reporting to the Senior Engineer, the position is an integral part of the signal processing group and develops complex specialty software for engineering research programs, with a focus on imaging sonar array beamforming and target detection, classification, localization, and tracking. The engineer updates existing code and independently designs, develops, and codes new applications, including converting MATLAB algorithms to run on real-time systems and dedicated hardware such as GPUs. The role works closely with software developers and system architects in an agile environment, contributes to design and code reviews, creates test plans, clarifies requirements with customers, and follows project coding conventions and interface documentation practices. The engineer tests their own code and conducts system regression testing. Responsibilities are allocated as follows: Signal Processing/Software Engineering (60% FTE), Reporting and Documenting (20% FTE), and Testing (20% FTE). The position also includes engineering field work to support testing of developed systems. This is a regular, 100% FTE position on first shift. A federal security clearance is required; the person hired must be a U.S. citizen and obtain and maintain a Department of Defense Personnel Security Clearance.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Sciences, or a similar engineering field, and at least four years of experience; equivalent education and/or experience may substitute where permitted.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense Personnel Security Clearance; a federal security clearance is required for the position.
  • Working knowledge of array signal processing.
  • Excellent computer skills and experience with Linux, C/C++, MATLAB, and Python.
  • Understanding of the software development process.
  • Previous experience applying signal processing techniques to real-time systems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to interact cooperatively to solve problems effectively.
  • Ability to apply independent problem-solving using existing and emerging scientific or engineering knowledge.
  • Ability to develop new research or engineering methods and approaches and contribute to solution strategies.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including documentation, attention to detail, communication, and time management.
  • Experience with software revision control systems.
  • Experience with collaborative bug-tracking systems.
  • Ability to work in an agile environment and follow project-defined coding conventions and interface documentation techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Current active Department of Defense security clearance.
  • Experience characterizing sonar system performance, including signal and noise analysis and evaluation of beamforming techniques.
  • User interface development experience.
  • Experience with FPGA SoCs.
  • Rust experience.
  • Experience with system and application performance monitoring tools.
  • Linux systems operation experience.
  • Familiarity with Linux network configuration.

Responsibilities

  • Design, prototype, and optimize algorithms in MATLAB and C/C++.
  • Develop complex specialty software for engineering research programs, including beamforming and sonar target detection, classification, localization, and tracking.
  • Convert algorithms to run in real time on dedicated hardware, including GPUs.
  • Implement new functionality within the existing code base as part of the software development team.
  • Create standalone applications and toolsets as needed.
  • Create user interfaces to control sonar systems and algorithm and hardware parameters.
  • Review and iterate software requirements with customers and the team.
  • Report weekly progress to the program manager.
  • Participate in and present system design information at program design reviews.
  • Create formal interface documentation and document code as needed.
  • Perform engineering field work to support testing of developed systems.
  • Unit test new or updated code and regression test full-system capabilities.
  • Identify gaps in requirements and clarify them with the customer.
