About The Position

The Shipping Clerk verifies and keeps records on incoming and outgoing shipments and prepares items for shipment. This role involves comparing identifying information and counts, weighs, or measures items of incoming and outgoing shipments to verify information against bills of lading, invoices, orders, or other records. The clerk determines the method of shipment, utilizing knowledge of shipping procedures, routes, and rates. They will affix shipping labels on packed cartons or stencil identifying shipping information on cartons, using stenciling equipment. Responsibilities also include assembling wooden or cardboard containers or selecting preassembled containers, inserting items into containers using spacers, fillers, and protective padding, and nailing covers on wooden crates and binding containers with metal tape using a strapping machine. Additionally, the clerk will stamp, stencil, or glue identifying information and shipping instructions onto crates or containers, post weights and shipping charges, and affix postage. The role also involves unpacking and examining incoming shipments, rejecting damaged items, recording shortages, and corresponding with the shipper to rectify damages and shortages, and routing items to departments. A key aspect of this role is familiarity with looking up and providing Harmonized System Codes for international shipments, examining outgoing shipments to ensure they meet specifications, and maintaining an inventory of shipping materials and supplies. The clerk may operate a tier-lift truck or use a handtruck to move shipments and may direct others in preparing outgoing and receiving incoming shipments. This position may be specialized as a Freight Clerk, Reshipping Clerk, Returned-Goods Receiving Clerk, or Route Returner.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in shipping or logistics operations.
  • Understanding of domestic and international shipping processes.
  • Knowledge of freight carriers, customs documentation, Incoterms, and export compliance.
  • Good organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and manage multiple priorities.
