About The Position

Henry Street Settlement opens doors of opportunity to enrich lives and expand human progress for Lower East Side residents and other New Yorkers through social services, arts, and health care programs. Building on its 125+year legacy of innovation and effective programming, Henry Street offers more than 50 programs and is one of New York City’s largest social service agencies. Helen’s House is a transitional housing program that provides temporary accommodations with on-site social services for 16 single parents and their children up to nine years old. During their stay, each family is housed in a furnished efficiency apartment and has access to onsite social services that address the psychological and concrete causes and effects of homelessness and unemployment. The Shift Supervisor partners with the Senior Leadership Team to support the safe and efficient operations of a 24-hour homeless family shelter. This position is designed to provide operational coverage across both the evening and overnight shifts. The employee will be scheduled to work portions of each shift to support continuity between teams and ensure smooth shift transitions and is responsible for supervising the operations team and contracted security staff, while providing onsite operational oversight during evening and overnight hours. The role oversees crisis management, safety, staff coordination, and daily operations to ensure quality service delivery in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • S. Diploma/GED required
  • F-02 required
  • Certificate of Fitness for Coordinator of Fire Safety and Alarm Systems in Homeless Shelters (F-80) required
  • Security License required
  • 3-5 years of management experience required
  • 1-3 years of experience in the social services field required
  • Proven ability to critical think, problem solve, troubleshoot, and manage crisis situations
  • Strong management, interpersonal, writing, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office and Google Suite required
  • CPR/First Aid Certification within 90 days of hire
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including some holidays, evenings and weekends

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • High preference for candidates with experience in shelter/transitional and supportive housing
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
  • Experience working with families, experiencing domestic violence and homelessness preferred
  • Experience in database navigation (CARES/AWARDS) strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for task management and delegation
  • Responsible for programmatic safety and crisis management
  • Task manages a team of resident assistants, and contracted security.
  • Provide management oversight in a 24-hour homeless facility for families during the evening, overnight, and on weekends
  • Ensure the accurate completion of operations team task
  • Conduct in person and telephone intakes with new families
  • Assist with maintaining and creating schedules for operations staff, manage call outs and coverage as needed
  • Respond to emergencies; document thoroughly and submit required incident reports internally and externally to funders
  • Oversee safety within the facility
  • Conduct fire drills as scheduled
  • Manage and de-escalate crisis as needed
  • This position is a "face to face" relief post
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisor
