About The Position

The SGA Legislative Issues Director reports to the Executive Director and chairs the Legislative Affairs Committee. This role serves as the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point delegation leader to all state-wide and national-wide student association conventions and conferences. The Director actively promotes student involvement in, and understanding of, campus, local, state, and federal legislation, and advocates on behalf of students at these levels. Key responsibilities include forming working relationships with local and state representatives and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Legislative Liaison, managing and promoting SGA Lawyer services, and organizing and promoting elections. The Director also monitors legislative issues daily, briefs the President, collaborates with fellow directors on events, and attends SGA Senate and Executive Staff meetings. A minimum of 10 hours per week is required in the SGA Office or related work, excluding Student Senate. Additionally, the Director must meet with the Executive Director near the end of each semester to discuss and document transitional material, including accomplishments and tips, which must be typed, emailed, and stored in the SGA email account, as well as handed over for the next person. Transitional materials must also include an updated contact list at the last executive meeting of the term. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Reports to the Executive Director
  • Serve a minimum of 10 hours per week in the SGA Office or related work meeting on campus, with the exception of Student Senate
  • Documentation must be typed, emailed, and stored in the Student Government Association email account, as well as handed over for the next person in the role
  • Transitional materials must also include an updated list of contacts at the last meeting of the executive's term
  • Authorization to work within the United States as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986

  • Advocate on behalf of students at the local, state, and federal level
  • Form working relationships with local and state representatives (e.g. alder people, state assemblyperson, etc.) and stay in constant contact with them regarding issues that affect University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
  • Form a working relationship with the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Legislative Liaison
  • Manage and promote the Student Government Association Lawyer services
  • Organize and promote elections of any kind to the student body: Student Government Association, local, state, and federal
  • Monitor the news daily about legislative issues and brief the President
  • Collaborate with fellow directors to plan events regarding campuswide observation days
  • Attend the Student Government Association Senate and the Executive Staff meetings
  • Serve a minimum of 10 hours per week in the SGA Office or related work meeting on campus, with the exception of Student Senate
  • Meet at a minimum of once near the end of each semester with the Executive Director to specifically discuss and document transitional material including semester accomplishments and helpful tips
  • Documentation must be typed, emailed, and stored in the Student Government Association email account, as well as handed over for the next person in the role
  • Transitional materials must also include an updated list of contacts at the last meeting of the executive's term
  • Other duties as assigned
