About The Position

This position is for a Sessional Lecturer to teach FOR201HS - Conservation of Tropical and Subtropical Forests. The course covers the world's major tropical and subtropical forest biomes, prospects for conservation and sustainable management, consequences of different forest development strategies, tropical deforestation and selective logging, agroforestry, biodiversity and non-timber forest products, the fuelwood crisis, large carnivore conservation, and ecological, economic, and social perspectives. This role is a co-instructor position with an estimated course enrollment of 250 students and no TA support. The class schedule is Tuesdays from 13:00 to 15:00, with the sessional dates of appointment from January 1, 2027, to April 30, 2027.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. preferred in forest conservation, tropical ecology, geography, or environmental sciences, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Knowledge of tropical and subtropical biomes, deforestation drivers, agroforestry, and biodiversity conservation.
  • Understanding of ecological, economic, and social perspectives relating to global forest management.
  • Familiarity with digital learning tools including the University of Toronto Quercus system to manage course notes and readings.
  • Ability to run interactive office hours.
  • Ability to guide student assignments.
  • Ability to oversee and coordinate teaching assistants.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience designing, lecturing, or TAing university-level courses in ecology or conservation is recommended.

Responsibilities

  • Teach 12 lecture hours (6 weeks) addressing ecological, economic, and social tropical forest concepts.
  • Provide critical review of tropical and subtropical forest dynamics, selective logging, and agroforestry.
  • Build/update appropriate course syllabus.
  • Manage course software (Quercus).
  • Coordinate guest lecturers where applicable.
  • Grade and provide guidance for student assignments, group projects, midterms, and final exams.
  • Conduct regular office hours to mentor students on research and writing standards.
  • Oversee and coordinate teaching assistants (though none are estimated for this course).
