About The Position

This position is for a Sessional Lecturer to teach ENG235H1S LEC0101 - The Graphic Novel. The course is an introduction to book-length sequential art, covering fictional and nonfictional comics with a focus on formal properties like narrative layout and text/art hybridity. Themes may include superheroes, auto/biography, the figure of the outsider, women in comics, alienation and youth, and war reporting. The estimated TA support for the course is 270 hours, and the estimated course enrollment is 120 students. Classes are scheduled for Mondays 3-5pm and Wednesdays 4-5pm, in person. The sessional dates of appointment are from January 1, 2027, to April 30, 2027, and the position includes the completion of any coursework and marking not finished by April 30, 2027.

Requirements

  • A background in the graphic novel with a PhD or strong academic record in the field
  • Demonstrated ability to teach the graphic novel at the undergraduate level

  • Extensive and recent experience of teaching this course or a closely equivalent course

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of course outline, course syllabus, and course marking scheme
  • Planning seminar meetings, delivering seminar instructions, developing, marking and administering course assignments
  • Setting and marking tests/exams and course administration in accordance with University of Toronto regulations as described in the Faculty of Arts & Science Academic Handbook for Instructors
  • Submission of grades
  • Available and hold regular office hours for academic counselling of students
  • Dealing with student enquiries, appeals and petitions
  • Holding regular office hours and the supervision of any assigned TA support
