About The Position

The Institute for Management and Innovation’s Master of Urban Innovation has a Sessional Lecturer position available for the Fall 2026 term. This course, MUI1020H – Civic Engagement and Economic Development, provides an overview and critical analysis of core constructs used to understand the role of civic engagement in economic and community development. It begins with theoretical constructs, policy contexts, and spatial dimensions of community and economic development, examining challenges and prospects for meeting local economic growth and social equity objectives. The course then shifts to the process of engaging the community and broader civic organizations, exploring methods, strategies, and tactics, focusing on planning, implementation, and management. Finally, it examines how new methods of civic engagement contribute to community and economic development practice and explores various approaches and programs for integrating these goals. The primary objective is to help students understand the relationship between theory, process, and practice in community and economic development, and to identify key themes, challenges, and opportunities for innovation.

Requirements

Ph.D. in geography, planning, political science, or a related field.
Demonstrated industry, government, and/or public policy experience in domains related to course content.
Must not be a current University of Toronto student.

Responsibilities

Design, teaching and delivery of a University credit course.
Conduct weekly lectures.
Meet with student teams to guide and advise on assignments.
Hold weekly office hours.
Mark and evaluate all student assignments.
Record student attendance.
Record and submit grades.
Communicate with students on course-related matters.
Build and maintain Quercus course shell.
Design course syllabus, content, and assignments in close consultation with the Program Director.
Liaise with the Program Director regarding course content and curriculum.
