Internship 2027 Sensor Systems Engineer

Bedrock Robotics IncSan Francisco, CA

About The Position

This internship focuses on the Sensor Systems team, which is responsible for determining the optimal sensors, their placement, and their use for new machine types in Bedrock's fleet. The intern will own the sensor selection and placement analysis for a new machine platform, from initial trade studies to validation on physical hardware. This role involves working at the intersection of sensor physics, autonomy systems architecture, and mechanical integration, with a focus on solving real-world problems on construction sites.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in an engineering or engineering-adjacent discipline such as mechanical, electrical, physics, mechatronics, robotics, or computer science (or bringing equivalent hands-on experience).
  • Solid grasp of 3D geometry, coordinate frames, and transforms.
  • Proficiency in Python for analysis and tooling.
  • CAD fluency sufficient to reason about physical hardware placement.
  • Willingness to visit mock construction sites and test sensor configurations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with device physics, ray tracing, rendering, or coverage simulation.
  • Familiarity with autonomous vehicle sensor suites.
  • Exposure to heavy equipment or off-road machinery.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze sensor coverage, occlusion, and blind spots for candidate sensor suites on new machine types.
  • Build or extend tooling that models field of view, range, and coverage geometry.
  • Run trade studies weighing performance against cost, durability, and mounting constraints.
  • Prototype mounting concepts and validate coverage assumptions on actual machines.
  • Translate analysis into sensor requirements and specifications for the hardware team.
  • Collaborate with perception, hardware, and safety teams to ensure the sensor suite meets downstream needs.
