Senior UX Designer

About The Position

Agile Defense is hiring a Senior UX Designer to lead user research and design for Target Effect Pairing (TEP), built on the Maven Smart System for USPACOM Joint Fires. The role supports targeteers and other expert operators working through target development, effects pairing, capabilities analysis, and command decision and force assignment workflows. The designer will elicit requirements and analyze tasks with government targeteers, JFE and JTCB staff, and J32 operators, then translate findings into functional requirements, workflow specifications, and interface designs for engineering teams to implement. The designer will co-author user requirements with the Product Manager and Fires subject-matter experts and design approval gates and human-in-the-loop constraints that preserve government decision authority. Success includes producing an operator-validated analysis of current workflows in the first 90 days; translating research into requirements and designs engineers can implement without guesswork; creating data-dense comparison views and geospatial interfaces that perform well in usability testing; and making design rationale clear to engineers and leadership. The role also includes designing transparent decision pathways that allow analysts to understand recommendations, question them, adjudicate discrepancies, and override them. By the end of the first year, usability studies or field evaluations should measure changes in operator workload and inform the product backlog. The position is listed as on-site in Honolulu, Hawaii. The working-conditions section also describes regular on-site collaboration in the San Diego area, including with Government and development stakeholders at or in support of NIWC-Pacific. Work is primarily performed in professional office, Government, and technical development environments; it may occur in secure facilities with restrictions on personal electronic devices and remote connectivity. Periodic travel may be required. The role requires maintaining TS/SCI access eligibility.

Requirements

  • Ability to maintain required TS/SCI access.
  • Required certification(s): None.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading research and design for data-intensive or mission-critical applications used by expert operators.
  • Experience conducting task analysis or cognitive task analysis and translating results into requirements engineers implement.
  • Experience designing decision, approval, or governance steps into workflows and validating them in use.
  • Experience designing AI-enabled systems, with attention to explainability and human-machine teaming.
  • Background in human factors engineering, cognitive psychology, or ergonomics.
  • Experience conducting usability studies or field evaluations with highly specialized users.
  • Experience in DoW, Joint, combatant command, Navy/NIWC, or CDAO mission environments; knowledge of Joint Fires, command and control, or intelligence workflows is strongly valued.

Responsibilities

  • Lead user research and design for Target Effect Pairing (TEP) for USPACOM Joint Fires.
  • Conduct requirements elicitation and task analysis with government targeteers, JFE and JTCB staff, and J32 operators across capabilities analysis and command decision and force assignment workflows.
  • Translate research into functional requirements, workflow specifications, and interface designs for engineers to implement.
  • Co-author user requirements with the Product Manager and Fires subject-matter experts.
  • Design approval gates and human-in-the-loop constraints that preserve government decision authority.
  • Document and rank workflow pain points with Fires subject-matter experts and identify which workflow steps the product should change or leave alone.
  • Design data-dense comparison views, geospatial interfaces, and decision pathways that help analysts understand, question, adjudicate, and override system recommendations.
  • Document design rationale for engineering teams and leadership.
  • Conduct usability studies or field evaluations to measure operator workload and trust, and use findings to inform the product backlog.
