About The Position

Optum is seeking an experienced Senior UX Designer to shape and deliver high-quality web experiences. The role partners with content, digital, business, and technology teams to translate user needs, business objectives, and complex or ambiguous requests into effective digital experiences. The designer will guide work from problem framing and solution exploration through design, content-management-system implementation, launch, and ongoing improvement. The position combines UX thinking with strong visual design craft, applying information architecture, content hierarchy, human-centered design, accessibility, and responsive design pragmatically. The designer will work in Figma, build and update experiences in a CMS including Adobe Experience Manager, and make minor HTML and CSS adjustments when appropriate. The role also contributes to established design systems and component libraries, identifying when patterns should be extended or evolved. The designer uses analytics, behavioral insights, research, and user feedback to identify opportunities, shape hypotheses, and evaluate outcomes. They collaborate with cross-functional partners, communicate design rationale and tradeoffs, and help raise the team's design maturity. The role includes exploring AI and emerging technologies to improve design workflows and user experiences. The position is remote within the United States. Employees in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area are required to work in the office at least four days per week. Remote employees must adhere to UnitedHealth Group’s Telecommuter Policy. The annual salary range is $91,700–$163,700, based on full-time employment and factors such as labor market, education, and experience. Benefits are subject to eligibility requirements. Candidates must pass a drug test before beginning employment.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in UX, digital experience, interaction, web, product, or design, with experience operating at a mid-to-senior level.
  • A portfolio demonstrating high-quality web and digital experience design, including translating ambiguous business or content needs into compelling, usable experiences.
  • Ability to frame experience problems rather than simply execute predetermined solutions.
  • Proficiency in Figma, including experience design, components, wireframing, prototyping, and high-fidelity visual design.
  • Hands-on experience using a content management system to create and update web experiences.
  • Solid understanding of information architecture, content hierarchy, interaction design, usability, responsive design, accessibility, layout, typography, and visual hierarchy.
  • Working knowledge of UX and human-centered design principles and judgment to apply them pragmatically.
  • Experience working with established design systems and component-based web experiences.
  • Ability to take a project from initial request through problem framing, design, implementation, and refinement with limited oversight.
  • Comfort working in environments where requirements evolve and the path forward is not always clearly defined.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including explaining design decisions and tradeoffs to non-design stakeholders.
  • Experience using analytics, user feedback, research, or other qualitative and quantitative signals to inform design decisions and improvements.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high bar for design quality.
  • Curiosity about artificial intelligence and emerging design technologies, with experimentation or practical exploration of how they can improve design work.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS and ability to make minor front-end adjustments or troubleshoot presentation issues.
  • Experience designing and improving complex content-driven websites.
  • Experience conducting lightweight usability testing, prototype validation, or other user research.
  • Experience sourcing and curating photography for digital experiences.
  • Familiarity with WCAG and inclusive-design practices.
  • Experience in a large, complex organization with multiple stakeholders and established brand, technology, or governance standards.
  • Experience contributing to or evolving a design system.
  • Experience working with digital analytics or experimentation platforms.
  • Experience applying AI-enabled tools within UX, design, research, prototyping, development, or related workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with content, digital, business, and technology stakeholders to understand objectives, user needs, constraints, and measures of success.
  • Translate loosely defined requests and complex content requirements into clear, intuitive web experiences; frame the underlying problem and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Use information architecture, content hierarchy, interaction design, and user-journey thinking to organize complex information.
  • Design pages, page systems, and digital experiences, including wireframes, concepts, high-fidelity designs, and interactive prototypes in Figma.
  • Explore design alternatives and develop a clear point of view on recommended solutions.
  • Build, update, and publish web experiences in the content management system, including Adobe Experience Manager (AEM).
  • Iterate and improve existing web experiences after launch.
  • Apply human-centered design, accessibility, responsive design, usability, and interaction-design practices.
  • Identify opportunities to improve page architecture, hierarchy, storytelling, navigation, comprehension, engagement, and overall user experience.
  • Recommend changes to content structure, page architecture, or experience flow when the initial request is not the best solution.
  • Make minor HTML and CSS adjustments when appropriate to achieve the intended experience within the CMS.
  • Design within established design systems and component libraries, and identify opportunities to extend or evolve patterns and systems.
  • QA implemented experiences across screen sizes and environments for design quality, accessibility, responsiveness, and consistency.
  • Use analytics, behavioral insights, user feedback, research, and other signals to identify experience problems and opportunities.
  • Define success measures when appropriate and use post-launch signals to assess whether an experience achieves its intended outcome.
  • Apply lightweight research and validation methods, such as usability testing, stakeholder interviews, prototype testing, competitive analysis, and behavioral-data evaluation, when useful to decisions.
  • Develop hypotheses for improving experiences and translate them into design recommendations or experiments.
  • Balance user needs, business objectives, content requirements, technical constraints, accessibility, and visual quality in design decisions.
  • Identify recurring experience challenges that may be addressed through reusable patterns, new components, design-system evolution, or broader guidance.
  • Bring a strong visual and interaction-design point of view; apply judgment to typography, layout, hierarchy, imagery, motion, and responsive behavior.
  • Explore creative approaches, source and curate photography or other visual assets when needed, and align experiences with brand standards and user needs.
  • Maintain a high bar for design craft and polish within technical and organizational constraints.
  • Explore AI and emerging technologies for design activities such as ideation, prototyping, research synthesis, content exploration, and design iteration; use these tools thoughtfully and share useful methods and learnings with the team.
  • Independently move projects from ambiguous requests through problem framing, concept development, design, implementation, launch, and improvement.
  • Present design concepts and explain the reasoning, evidence, assumptions, and tradeoffs behind decisions.
  • Constructively challenge stakeholder requests when another approach may better address user or business needs.
  • Collaborate with content strategists, developers, marketers, analysts, product partners, and other designers; help stakeholders understand the effect of design, content, and technology decisions on user experience.
  • Proactively bring forward ideas and recommendations, share practices, facilitate constructive critique, and help establish repeatable design approaches.
  • Recognize broader systemic needs and advocate for improvements to patterns, components, standards, or design systems.
