About The Position

The Senior Underwriter, Excess Casualty (SUEC) is responsible for developing, managing, and maintaining a profitable book of excess casualty business for IFG Companies. This experienced underwriter will build strong relationships with wholesale producers to ensure favorable submission flows and profitable long-term underwriting results. The SUEC will evaluate submissions for new and renewal business, prioritize them, and prepare quotes for acceptable submissions, adhering strictly to IFG Companies' underwriting guidelines and operating within their Letter of Authority or referring business for higher approval levels. The SUEC will utilize IFG Companies' advanced underwriting tools, including rating matrices, predictive analytics, crime and credit scores, and other third-party data, to support the underwriting and quoting process, ensuring the use of approved forms.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5+ years of commercial excess casualty underwriting experience.
  • Sound knowledge of commercial excess casualty underwriting coverages.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college/university, with a major or coursework in insurance, risk management, economics, actuarial science, or related fields.
  • Knowledge of commercial excess casualty lines business, classifications, pricing, and coverage options with adherence to applicable statutory compliance requirements and corporate guidelines.
  • Ability to manage the SUEC's excess portfolio with appropriate overall limits, attachment points, and diversification.
  • General knowledge of the wholesale producer distribution system.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data and make well-informed, calculated risk decisions.
  • Strong problem-solving, reasoning, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks while meeting deadlines.
  • Proven team player, with an energetic personality and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computer skills and an ability to learn to work with proprietary systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, manage, and maintain a profitable book of excess casualty business.
  • Develop strong relationships with wholesale producers (agents and brokers).
  • Evaluate submissions for new and renewal business, prioritize them, and prepare quotes.
  • Adhere strictly to IFG Companies' underwriting guidelines and operating within the SUEC's Letter of Authority or referring business for higher levels of approval.
  • Employ IFG Companies' advanced underwriting tools to support the underwriting and quoting process.
  • Meet and work with producers in assigned territories to ensure high-quality submission opportunities.
  • Identify and select suitable submissions for quoting using prioritization tools.
  • Determine appropriate pricing, structure, and coverage terms.
  • Maintain excellent communication with producers regarding IFG Companies' product line offerings.
  • Promote the IFG Companies' brand.
  • Assist IFG Companies' marketing efforts by providing feedback on competitors, products, and the marketplace.
  • Provide or seek referral counsel with other underwriters, the Unit Head, and/or Corporate Underwriting.
  • Monitor the performance of new business underwritten.
  • Perform other duties, including new underwriter training and mentoring, as required.
  • Monitor the performance of the SUEC's business in force to determine appropriate underwriting actions for renewals.
  • Prepare renewal quotes sufficiently in advance of renewal dates.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and contractual considerations for contingent renewals or non-renewals.
  • Exhibit sound judgment and strong technical knowledge of underwriting principles.
  • Monitor and meet production, marketing, and profitability goals.
  • Stay informed of industry, competitor, and claim trends.
  • Become a subject matter expert for certain classes of business.
  • Travel regularly to meet with assigned producers.
  • Collaborate and assist other team members on underwriting and marketing matters.
  • Train, coach, and mentor less experienced underwriters and support staff.
