About The Position

The Cincinnati Specialty Underwriters Insurance Company is hiring an experienced excess and surplus lines underwriter for Montana. The candidate must reside within the territory or near the company’s Gilbert, Arizona headquarters. The position underwrites and prices new and renewal surplus lines commercial property and casualty business in partnership with producers and an assigned underwriting assistant. It involves assessing complex risks, meeting production and loss ratio goals, building relationships with producers and reinsurers, and working independently with significant authority and judgment. Travel within the assigned territory, including occasional overnight stays, is required. Complete training is provided in Cincinnati, Ohio, before deployment to the regional territory.

The annual pay range is $75,000–$140,000, based on education, experience, location, knowledge, skills, and abilities. Eligible associates may also receive an annual cash bonus and stock incentives based on company and individual performance.

Requirements

• Property and casualty underwriting experience.
• At least 5 years of experience working with commercial lines property and casualty products.
• Proficient use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
• Strong decision-making, analytical, and negotiating abilities.
• Ability and desire to build relationships and listen effectively.
• Ability to develop positive working relationships with team members and agents and seek mutually beneficial solutions.
• Strong verbal communication skills to explain, negotiate, and present information, with an understanding of when to communicate verbally or in writing.
• Valid driver’s license; final candidates are subject to a Motor Vehicle Record background check.

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor’s degree or extensive relevant excess and surplus lines underwriting experience.
• Prior excess and surplus casualty underwriting experience with a carrier, broker, or MGA.
• ASLI or CPCU designation.
• Carrier background.

Responsibilities

• Partner with producers and an assigned underwriting assistant to solicit, underwrite, and price new and renewal surplus lines commercial property and casualty business.
• Determine individual risk acceptability, pricing, coverage, terms, and conditions.
• Develop, analyze, and evaluate information and exposures for complex risks.
• Achieve production and loss ratio goals within the assigned regional territory.
• Work independently with a high level of authority and judgment.
• Determine the need for and secure appropriate reinsurance on individual accounts.
• Mentor and train underwriters and underwriting assistants.
• Develop successful business relationships with producers and reinsurers.
• Research new products and coverage forms.
• Travel within the assigned territory, which may include overnight stays.
