About The Position

Tau is a venture-backed advanced technology company based in the Bay Area (Redwood City, CA) that designs and develops next-generation products for electrification. The company was founded on the belief that modern power conversion systems are key to a more sustainable future and increased energy security. Tau has pioneered technologies leveraging software-enabled hardware, including innovations across electric machines, inverters, controllers, thermal management, simulation, and charging systems. The team, composed of engineers, scientists, technologists, operators, and industry leaders, advances the internal technology roadmap and collaborates with commercial partners. Tau seeks individuals passionate about energy and electrification, who enjoy discovering and defining problems, delivering innovative solutions, and contributing across disciplines. The Senior Software Release Manager will own the technical embedded software architecture and the infrastructure used to build, validate, and release it. This role combines deep embedded software design with release engineering, focusing on defining software structure (modularity, interfaces, timing, safety boundaries) and ensuring reliable build, test, versioning, and deployment across evolving hardware platforms. The manager is responsible for ensuring Tau’s software stack is architecturally sound (modular, testable, deterministic), operationally scalable (CI/CD, HIL-integrated, reproducible), and release-ready at all times (traceable, validated, aligned with hardware).

Requirements

  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • 8+ years of experience in embedded software development, with significant technical ownership
  • Strong background in real-time systems (RTOS, bare-metal scheduling, interrupt-driven design)
  • Deep experience with embedded C/C++ and system-level debugging
  • Proven experience designing scalable software architectures for hardware-integrated systems
  • Experience with ISO 26262, ASPICE, or similar safety-critical standards
  • Strong experience with build systems and toolchains (CMake, Bazel, Make, cross-compilers, linkers)
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD systems in embedded environments
  • Experience with version control and configuration management at scale (Git, branching strategies, monorepos)
  • Ability to operate across abstraction layers—from control algorithms to low-level hardware interfaces

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with motor control, power electronics, or inverter systems
  • Familiarity with AUTOSAR or similar embedded frameworks
  • Experience with model-based design (MATLAB/Simulink)
  • Scripting experience (Python, Bash) for tooling and automation

Responsibilities

  • Define software architecture for an embedded software platform that includes motor control and power conversion systems
  • Establish clear module boundaries, interfaces, and ownership across firmware, controls, and system layers
  • Design for real-time performance (task scheduling, interrupt handling, latency constraints, determinism)
  • Ensure testability at all levels (unit, integration, SIL, HIL, on-target) through architecture decisions
  • Guide design patterns for safety-critical and high-reliability systems (fault handling, state machines, redundancy)
  • Review and approve critical changes to software architecture and control system integration
  • Own branching strategy, versioning, and configuration management across firmware and system software
  • Define software baselines aligned to hardware revisions and system configurations
  • Ensure deterministic, reproducible builds (toolchains, dependencies, environment control)
  • Implement artifact management and traceability from requirements through release
  • Architect CI/CD pipelines for embedded systems (cross-compilation, flashing, hardware validation loops)
  • Integrate SIL and HIL environments into automated release gating
  • Enable continuous validation on real hardware (test benches, dynos, HIL rigs)
  • Drive improvements in build performance, test parallelization, and infrastructure reliability
